Real talk? I think the Alderney Landing Theatre and Round Room are two of the most underrated…read morespaces we've got in this city. Every time I pop up to swoon over the view, the lighting, and the layout, I sink deeper and deeper into a venue crush. Wheelchair accessible with safe and reliable elevators (worth pointing out considering some of the others in the city), the theatre space is on the upper level of Alderney, just above the farmer's market space. As you climb up, you get a gorgeous view of Halifax and the harbour through the all glass walls that only gets better once you reach your destination. Upstairs, the round as they call it is sizable and beautifully lit by the reflection off the harbour waters. All the glass makes the place feel even bigger than it is - kind of like an outdoor amphitheater...but, you know, inside. So, uh, a theatre. Nevermind. Bad comparison. While inside the theatre is comfortable for audiences and guests attending any number of community-driven performances throughout the year, I do find the stage strikes me as a bit small. I suspect that may be the only thing holding this space back from a booker's point of view. All the other pieces are in place to welcome bigger touring productions otherwise.

The Conservatory is a one-stop shop for lessons in all things musical--voice, piano, instruments,…read moreand dance. Housed in an old school on Chebucto Road, the setting itself is a bit shabby chic. You get the feeling the place was grander back in the day and perhaps shows its wear a bit. The classrooms have high ceilings and large windows, giving the learning spaces and dance studios a nice feel. I will say the Performance Hall is an awesome and beautiful space for recitals and concerts. These folks take their music seriously. All of the musical instructors have extensive musical education and experience and many of them perform with local arts organizations. That being said, the Conservatory is a place for everyone, beginners, hoobyists and more serious students. The prices are not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. My daughter is currently enrolled in her first year of piano lessons and after just six weeks, the children are being given an opportunity to perform at the department Hallowe'en party. She might not be Beethoven but being given an opportunity to perform means that she can get used to playing in front of others at an early age. Her instructor teaches good technique and is very personable and, best of all, motivating in a friendly way. The Conservatory to me at least seems to emphasize a more classical approach to performance so if you're looking to join a rock band maybe you would take lessons elsewhere.

Went as apart of a large group, didn't know what to expect…read more I imagined small round tables, candle light, smoky room and lots of role playing. What I got instead was a pleasurable 2.5 hour supper and entertained as well! When first entering the location, you can take the elevator to the 3rd floor or take the stairs on the right. You enter the lounge area with full bar and self coat check. At 6:45 the players come out and are within the crowd to do the housekeeping and setting of the theater part. Parties are led into the other room and seated. As part of the large group we were sat at long tables. In front of us were the menus & huge loaf of bread for 6 people. The theater part was in the corner, easy visible due to the seating layout. The 5 players were also our servers, so they went over the table, took our names and our full order. At the table we had the menu. Honestly, they had lots of choices. I saw afterwards that the menu is posted on their website. I had the seafood chowder, Cajun Sausage stuffed chicken breast & Baked Apple Crisp. Everybody in our table chose different items and were pleased with the meal. The players played about 9-10 songs from the rolling stones as part of the theater part in between servings us. Tickets are ~42$ per person and does not include tips, but adding a few extra bucks for the players is worth it as they really try to remember your name and stay in character when serving the dishes. Staff gets an A++ If you want try something different and not be forced to participate, this is a good spot to try. The website has all the info you need.

Maybe. Still, Grafton Dinner Theatre puts on a nice night on the town for when you're in the mood for this sort of thing. It's a couple of hours long with constant song, dance, or kitschy jokes for a crowd that simply eats it all up -read: older people from Cape Breton. Yeah. I went there. The space itself is weirdly divey. It's all very dark so you can't take much in besides the very small corner stage and long communal tables are set up to accommodate the maximum number of people possible. It's not so good for an intimate evening but perfect for a large group that has ideally had a few drinks beforehand. Pretty unremarkable food on the vegetarian front, but that's not too surprising.
