Commercial Hotel Young - The cpmmercial schnitzel

    Commercial Hotel Young

It wouldn't be a proper family road trip without at least one meal at a country pub. We had just…read morecovered a long stretch from Hamilton (Victoria) to Young (NSW) and after taking the Brother in Law's suggested "short cut" we had just pulled in to Young after a 950K drive. Young was going to be our pub dinner night on the trip. We had expected to reach Young round 5 but the short cut meant we didn't get in till nearly 9. We were starving. I mean really starving. The sort of starving you can only get by sitting in a car for 12 hours. The commercial hotel bistro was open till nine. . . We were in luck! Well the doors were open but the kitchen was already shutting up for the night. It looked like our short cut had denied us a pub dinner. We were just about to head back to the car and head for the Macca's we saw down the road but the good folks there took pitty on us and rustled up some of the daily specials for us. The daily special turned out to be a chicken Schnitzel about the size of my head. I swear it must have been a couple of whole de-boned chickens mashed together, crumbed and fried. Add a generous serving of chips, lashings of gravy and a surprisingly good salad and you had a meal big enough to feed a small nation. To give you an indication of just how big it was, my 15 year old son was struggling by the end of it. The surprise of the evening was that my 12 year old daughter polished hers off in record time. It was good schnitzel too. Nice and moist. Not greasy. Really well cooked. Nice chips. Nice gravy. And the price? Try $10. Yep. $10. More food than you can comfortably lift without risking a back injury for $10. Add a few beers from the bar (at country pub prices) and it was a really good meal. They do a special every night (except Sundays... They are shut Sundays), whether it's the $10 schnitzel or a $15 steak or a big plate of grilled barramundi for $12 or a burger or whatever the other ones were that I can't remember. Whatever it is, it will be huge and cheap. So if you are ever in Young, give the Commercial hotel a go. Just try to rock in before 8:30 because that's when their kitchen shuts up for the night. Oh... And never, ever take your brother in law's shortcut.
