I had initially contacted another doula in Flintstone, GA, but she was booked solid and sent me to Amy at BirthRite. What a blessing! Amy helped my husband and me have the calm, natural, joyous birth experience we wanted. When we first met, I was immediately struck by her soothing nature. I felt assured that no matter what we decided to do - even if I chose to get an epidural at the last minute - she would support our every decision. I'm glad to say that I didn't need any pain meds, because Amy comforted, coached, and massaged me through my rather long labor. She was wonderful with the hospital nurses and our OB, too. I guess natural childbirth is pretty rare at Erlanger East and frankly, I think it throws off their system for getting things done. I can see how these circumstances could lead to a contentious atmosphere, which is the last thing a laboring woman needs. That never happened. I credit Amy for creating a mellow environment, and for bringing a bag of chocolates for our very busy nurse! She's a true pro. If you want to give birth naturally (whether at home or at a hospital), it's wise to invest in a doula. Especially for first time parents, it's so hard to know if what you're experiencing is normal, or how close you are to the finish line. Amy's experience and wisdom was a priceless asset. If we decide to have another child, we will definitely work with her again.

Robin is highly knowledgeable about child development, infant sleep, sleep training, holistic childbirth, infant/child nutrition, and herbal medicine. She incorporates this skill set into every encounter with families! When providing overnight doula care, she takes meticulous notes, ensuring that the family is fully aware of how their babies are doing at night. With her down time, Robin is happy to pitch in around the home with tasks such as meal prep, laundry, or general organizing. She adapts to each environment gracefully and leaves every home better than she found it. I can go on and on about all of Robin's wonderful qualities. She is an excellent listener; she's deeply intuitive, non judgmental, proactive, curious, eager to learn and help. All of her special touches like setting out a blue covering for me because blue is my favorite color, letting me choose the cover for the heating pack based on how I'm feeling that day, offering a warm beverage if things aren't moving as well as they should, sending me home with electrolyte samples-- these are all things that don't go unnoticed and make the experience better. Rather than focusing on the procedure, Miss Hart steered the conversation into my religious beliefs and political views--completely unsolicited and entirely out of place. I was questioned, judged, and ultimately told that she couldn't understand how someone could be both a Democrat and a Christian. This wasn't a passing comment--it was repeated and pressed upon me throughout the appointment, making it feel more like an interrogation than a service. To make matters worse, I received a follow-up text from her the next day that read: "Well, you said you weren't a Democrat so I don't see why you were offended by me saying that I can't understand how a Democrat can be a Christian. You're an independent so that doesn't put you in that category." She then accused me of lying and intentionally deceiving her because I didn't inform her I wouldn't be returning. That level of entitlement--expecting a client to justify why they won't return after such an inappropriate experience--is astonishing. Personal beliefs have no place in a professional setting unless the client brings them up, and even then, it should be handled with respect. What happened during and after this appointment crossed every boundary of professionalism and decency. If you're considering this provider, ask yourself whether you're comfortable having your beliefs questioned and judged while sitting in the chair. For me, this was a one-and-done experience--and not for the reasons I expected.
