Been here a few times and they've made a few changes I don't love. First off, they have replaced cucumbers for lettuce. Just an odd change since the cost is low on both. Traditional sushi does not have lettuce...bad sushi places and grocery stores use lettuce. Second, the head chef seems to have let an apprentice take on the omakase. This completely changes the experience. I don't like the cheese on sushi and having it served by a backup guy just doesn't do it. Used to love this place but questioning their direction. Came for a weekday dinner and the place was empty. Nice having the ordering tablet on the table, just like in Japan, though the descriptions were generic and unhelpful (all said the fish were high in protein and nutritious for rebuilding muscle). We asked about the fish of the day and special fish which happened to be the same, mackerel, the day we went. Interestingly, the servers had no idea about the fish aspects of the menu and everything was deferred to the sushi chefs. Ordered a few temaki (hand rolls) - yellowtail and spicy tuna- and they were tasty! All the nigiri we ordered were fresh without fishiness, and had generous portions for the price. Nice to have fresh wasabi which had a nice kick and sweetness. Thoroughly enjoyed these nigiri: seared black cod, ocean trout, hamachi/yellowtail, unagi. Yuzu & rainbow rolls had super appetizing sauces. Ordered the uni from Japan which was supposed to be sweeter than creamier but this one was very distasteful for me, had a strong scent like saliva, and I was unable to tolerate it. read more

We were the only people in at this time. We went right around 5pm on a Sunday. There we were to go orders though. Background music: They were playing mostly r&b so I liked it. My honey did not like the music. The food was decent. One thing I loved was that they had fresh wasabi. It's amazing. The flavor profile is fresh, bright, with an herbaceous heat. The bad thing is that if you get it to go, the flavor peaks about 5 min after it's grated, so you gotta be quick. We ordered a lot to be able to try a lot. Shrimp tempura-4 pieces, standard tempura, nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Very crunchy, served with either a spicy Mayo or soy dipping sauce. The hot green tea was perfect. Piping hot, you get your own tea pot so it stays hot throughout your meal. Definitely would drink this again. I was disappointed they had a bunch of other drinks listed online but didn't have available when we were there. I really wanted an iced matcha or taro drink. Tenderloin caviar with crispy rice 4 pieces for $22. Meh. They were his favorite, I thought it was just okay. The tenderloin was pretty "well done" and I prefer beef to be cooked a little less. You could barely taste the caviar and I didn't like the way they did their crispy rice in comparison to other places I've had crispy rice. The beef flavor was nice though. Unagi with eel sauce, as good as expected. This is also something most sushi places offer. It was done well, would eat it again. The ratio of rice to unagi was good, didn't have any sort of fishy flavor, not too much eel sauce to make it overly sweet. Yuzu SP- well balanced combination. I'm a huge fan of blue crab. 8/10 Blue crab with cucumber hand roll. So good! It wasn't super giant, good ratio of rice to blue crab. You get the freshness of the cucumber, the mild sweetness of the blue crab. Yasss.Def would eat again. 9/10 Mustard aioli shrimp with cucumber. Meh. Not much flavor. This was the last roll I ordered. Not a fan. The shrimp was cooked fine but flavor was very flat. Their other rolls were better. I'd skip this one next time. 3/10 Yuzu poke roll - great combination of flavors, fresh, bright, and the yuzu was not excessive. 8.5/10 Scallop- I asked for it to be spicy as spicy scallop is one of my go to orders for sushi. The scallop flavor itself was subtle and fresh, but to make it spicy they added a pickled jalapeño and some yuzu aguachile. Meh. Wouldn't order again this again as a spicy one. It probably tasted decent as it was. 4/10 Overall, I'm glad I tried it. Love the fresh wasabi but it's not close to my house. So if I was closer, I'd probably be back more. read more

I flew in for the Omakase experience and it did not disappoint. The fish was so fresh to the point I had to ask the chef where is he getting it in the dessert. Every bite was amazing and worth the 95.00. I even ordered hot sake which was only 12.00 dollars. My only wish was that they wrapped the sake bottle in a warm towel as the sake cooled off towards the end. Total combined for both chefs, they have 24yrs of experience which speaks volumes for the taste, how they used seasonal ingredients and how they were in sink during the prep for each course. read more

Came in on a weekend night and didn't need a reservation. We were in the area after looking at some Christmas lights and found this place on Yelp. It is a smaller sushi restaurant but sitting at the bar felt super authentic, also since the owner/chef is Japanese. Sushi was prepped right in front of you at the bar which was fun to watch. Also they use an iPad type ordering system for food and drinks which is very cool too. Price was a little high, but have definitely have eaten at more expensive Asian restaurants. Made a reservation for omakase after hearing great things about this from a friend and then reading Chef Yusuke's biography. Hailing from Osaka Japan and putting in work at Tsuji culinary academy and then working at Nobu in Beverly Hills, I had very high expectations. It's very easy to find and plenty of parking in the little strip mall. Upon entering Chef Yosuke and team greeted us warmly and got us prepped for the experience. I've only had omakase one other time in New York and there's a casualness that can throw you off at Yuzu Omakase due to the decor and location but don't let that fool you. This sushi was great and Chef Yusuke sources his fish from all over many of the pieces coming from Japan directly. But the way he's mixing those flavors were insane and for the price of $85 I feel like it's an amazing value for 13 pieces. Big pieces of fish on the rice too not skimpy. There was only 1 piece that I felt was not as good as the others and that was the Steak Tenderloin, but that's my opinion. There were also some flavors like the Yuzu Aguacate that is drizzled on the fish that is very unique, and depending on how you feel about that flavor profile can push you off. However, the flavors were very well done and Chef likes to integrate different textures in. Ingredients were super fresh as you can see them as he's working with them. Loved seeing the details he puts on the fish in front of you, and it was great to watch a master work. I do want to highlight the last thing served to us which was the Japanese Mountain Peach. I've never heard of that in my life, and this was such a fun treat at the end. Legit blew my mind because it just was such a great way to cap off the experience. Didn't have a great experience here, although from the sounds of the reviews the Omakase experience is the right way to eat here. My wife and I were just looking to try out regular roll's and some Sashimi. The special rolls were just not great from an appearance or taste standpoint. (See picture). The pickled peppers, load of imitation crab, and mediocre fish I'd give a 3/10. They offer bluefin tuna rolls but either they are sourcing very low quality bluefin or it's not bluefin and being marketed as such. The price point for them was low but I thought maybe they are subsidizing trying to grow. Nope, just lower quality tuna. The service was what I'd expect from a higher end sushi spot where they don't often dote on you like typical US restaurants which was perfectly fine. The food was just very meh and our experience was the opposite of what we saw in many other yelp reviews. I think I'd only do the Omakase if I were to go there. read more

The quality was great, either pretty classic nigiris either the occasional modern dressing. With so many great sushi places popping up, it's hard to rank Yuzu as the best. However, the value absolutely sets it apart. We got 14 pieces for $85 which is amazing. The quality is not to be understated either. I didn't make this reservation lightly--I was celebrating something special. I booked the reservation through the Yelp app, which clearly states "Make a reservation -- Table for 2," as shown in the image I've uploaded. I also uploaded an example from a different restaurant showing the proper way to offer different dining options when taking reservations. I was so excited about this visit that I arrived early and walked around the plaza, eagerly waiting for them to open. Once the restaurant opened, we walked in to find only one waitress and the owner working. The owner insisted on charging the two of us for Omakase. I explained that I had booked a table, not Omakase, and that my wife doesn't eat sushi. This led to a confrontation that lasted what felt like far too long, completely spoiling what could have been a perfect day. Despite the rocky start, we still ordered quite a bit, hoping to make the best of the experience. Unfortunately, the sushi was average at best, and the up-charges for searing were absolutely ridiculous. In hindsight, we shouldn't have bothered--it wasn't worth it. Coming from the restaurant world, I can confidently say that being a great chef doesn't necessarily mean you can also be the face of the restaurant or handle the business side effectively, even if it's your own establishment. read more

This new neighborhood gem is so cute! I happened across it by accident. They have several seatings a day for preplanned omakase so check in advance. The server seemed a bit confused when I showed up as a walk in, but we got it figured out . Love the $85 price point since most places charge over $100. I wandered in on a Thursday night and put my hand in for a 6pm seating. The chef provided 13 sushi tastings and a handroll. Everything was fabulous. The walk into the establishment toward the bar is lovely and intimate. This is a true omakase experience with a mini presentation per bite by Chef Yusu himself. You eat with your fingers and enjoy one bite at a time. My favorites were the sea bass with plum sauce, sweet shrimp, and the sea urchin over caviar with lemon zest. Yes! I'd skip the rice on that one next time so nothing competes with the sea urchin. The tenderloin with truffle sauce was decadent and the giant clam my incredible! Melted in my mouth! Lovely ending with blue crab handful. The chef is such a sweetheart and so well-mannered. Heard good things about this place so gave it a try with my daughter. We walked in on a Wednesday about 5:45pm, no other patrons were inside. Nice small space and a server asked if we had a reservation, struck me as odd. I said no and she said we could sit where we'd like. She bought us two waters and walked away, never explained we needed to order off the tablet affixed to the table. We figured it out, so you order on the tablet, add tip, then pay with Apple Pay or credit card. I really didn't like tipping before we were served. I flagged the server down and asked about the sashimi selection. She showed us three pictures of sashimi on the tablet. I asked if it was only three pieces, she said yes. The sashimi selection is minimal, pictures showed Bluefin Tuna, Salmon or Yellowtail, 3 pieces on a plate with a liquid type of sauce for $12.00. I normally only eat sashimi, so for me it wasn't great. If you prefer sashimi, I wouldn't recommend this place. If you like sushi rolls, you might like it. They had a decent selection of rolls. We ordered a couple special cut rolls. The server dropped them off, and never came back. Once to bring waters, and once to drop the sushi. Never checked on us once. She really shouldn't have gotten any tip at all. The rolls were mediocre. Overall, was not a great experience. The atmosphere is very nice and it got busier while we were there. We are frequent omakase diners in San Diego, and this was the weakest experience we've had. There was no proper greeting, the staff looked unprofessional, and our waiter mumbled dish explanations so half the table didn't even know what we were eating. The chef also failed to explain why dishes were served, which defeats the purpose of omakase. The restaurant was dirty, and we knew right away this would be an odd experience. The fish was poorly handled. Cuts were overly thick and chewy, and pieces were left sitting out and warming on the table. After the chef assembled the nigiri, assistants came in afterward and sloppily slapped sauces on top, completely undermining the presentation. There were unnecessary gimmicks throughout the meal, like Parmesan crisps on hamachi and sweet potato crisps on trout. Sushi should be simple and ingredient-focused, not overloaded with forced textures. The meal ended with a handroll served with piping hot rice that immediately soggied the seaweed into a stretchy mess, basic sushi execution failure. To top it off, we were told we were eating "local" sea bass from Yuma, Arizona. Overpriced, misrepresented, and amateur. If you care about real omakase, avoid this place. read more

Had omakase reservations for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. The omakase option is by reservation only fyi. Seating was at the bar top area by the chef's station. The sushi chef for the experience was meticulous in each piece he crafted. There is a tablet for each diner so that we can see what's on course and to add or deny options. I've been to a few omakase restaurants and this one ranks right up there with the best of them. The small seating area reminds me of the some of the better bay area sushi places where you have to book months in advance. Luckily the word isn't out on Yuzu yet and we were able to get a reservation. When I first started eating sushi, my Japanese friend he told me you eat it with your fingers. Yuzu keeps that tradition going and they give you a cloth to wipe your fingers. Sitting at the sushi bar is the place to be so you can see the detail that goes into each piece of sushi. Nice selection of sake and a great selection of sushi. It's an interesting location being in a small strip mall but some of my favorite restaurants are in non-descript locations so don't let that stop you from visiting. read more

You need to make a reservation because it is a VERY intimate dining experience with you, the chef, and only 5 other people seated in the whole place at a time- so Omakase style.
