Had a wonderful dinner at Zandunga. Makes perfect sense why they have been open for 15 years. Although small, the restaurant serves some amazing regional dishes. As an appetizer we had the garnachas... wow! These are packed with flavor. Simple tostada bottom with some amazing filling on top and cheese. What makes this even more enjoyable is the pickled onion (curtido) with pineapple you accompany the dish with. Flavor!!! For the main I had the roasted/bbq pork. This is served with in a red salsa that I believe is made from the pork droppings. The meat was insanely tender and the flavor was exquisite. Some homemade tortillas helped me devour every last drop and shred of meat. Can't go wrong with this dish. Everything about Zandunga was on point. The mojito just was nothing like an authentic Cuban mojito. Not enough lime or mint, too much syrup. The veggie tlayuda was mostly cabbage with a couple pieces of tomatoes thrown in. If there were any beans or cheese, I didn't taste them. The accompanying pickled onions and guac were fine but not enough to have much to add to a big tlayuda. The benches in the side are so uncomfortable, I had to roll up my jacket and put it between the bench and my back. Even that didn't work. Also you don't get the breeze you would have sitting in the uncovered area. The overall atmosphere is nice. Music not too loud for talking and a nice amount of space between tables. read more

Zandunga is a really cool restaurant specializing in the cuisine of the isthmus in Oaxaca. While it was almost 9PM, we were early for the area and quickly got a table on a weeknight. The restaurant was so charming - it was long and narrow with white walls and Tehuana tops for women decorating the walls. The tables and chairs were wood, and the lighting was soft. The service was warm and friendly. Fortunately for us, they also spoke English. We definitely ordered too much food because we were starved and a little spent emotionally and physically. DM ordered a Margarita Zandunga (85 pesos or $4.25), which is the classic cocktail made with mezcal in lieu of tequila. I ordered a Cocktail of the Day (85 pesos or $4.25), which was a mezcal martini with mezcal and gin. Both cocktails were fantastic - perfectly made and with excellent liquor. Before our dinner began, the snack of the house is tortillas al horno served with browned fish and two kinds of salsa - rosa and verde - as well as pickled onions. The tortillas al horno are made in the Oaxacan version of a pizza oven designed for this purpose. The tortillas are more like papadums than the classic version, but they are so good. The super fresh salsas were a zing of freshness with the minced fish that was reminiscent of pate. It was very good. For dinner, we had the Platon de Verduras (130 pesos or $6.50) and the Bontana Zandunga (450 pesos or $21). The Platon de Verduras was a generous plate of mixed grilled vegetables, including mushrooms, green beans, beets, broccoli, squash, onions, red bell peppers and cabbage. A plate of veggies was most welcome. The plato de bontanas was delicious albeit a bit too much for the two of us. It had two garnachas, which are two silver dollar corn tortillas topped with black beans, ground beef, cheese and salsa rojo. They were served with pickled cabbage. There were two molotes, which are sort of like empanadas, which were filled with pork and chicken and were topped with queso fresco, rema, salsa, and cilantro. These two things were both awesome. The corn base and or exterior were super fresh and tender, and the meat was plentiful, well-seasoned and tender. There was pico de gallo made with minced jalapenos, chopped tomato and dried shrimp - great on the tortillas al horno. Surprisingly, the shrimp did not have an odd flavor - they just tasted like sweet little shrimp. There was also carne horneada, which was basically shredded beef in a tomato and spice sauce, but it was a little tough. In the end, it did not matter because we also had a tamale with the same meat as well as olives and raisins. There was plenty of masa left, so I had some with the additional meat. Then there were two totopos or fried plantains served with crema and fresh cheese. The plantain was sweet on the inside and crunchy on the outside. While delicious, I was getting pretty full. Instead, I had the cheese with the rest of the salsa rojo, which was a great combination of creamy, salty and spicy. The service was fantastic and the house water was filtered, flavored with cucumber and totally safe. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

The atmosphere is lovely and calming with low lights and a cool breeze and the servers are very attentive and responsive. We went here on a slow Sunday evening at around 5:45 pm. After we ordered the servers brought an appetizer, some kind of fish with some spices and sautéed onions. It was fine, not very flavorful. One salsa was very spicy, the other mild. I ordered the vegetarian Tlayudas and my friend had a shrimp tamale. The alcohol is a little pricey, but I ordered a beer which was cold and poured into a glass. The Tlayudas was mild and tasty with beans, cabbage, tomatoes and 2 types of cheese, served with guacamole and a spicy salsa. A huge portion for 1 person. The tamale was also delicious. This place is definitely worth a visit for the calming atmosphere and the good service. The prices were reasonable for the most touristy part of town. read more

We had the mixed platter for two people thinking it would be a good way to try lots of the local dishes (380pesos, so not cheap) and didn't think it was overly special. Sadly, much of the food at the markets or smaller restaurants and street food stalls is much tastier and more authentic for a smidgen of the price. On our first night in Oaxaca our hotel staff recommended we check out Zandunga. The restaurant is full of Instagram perfect picture props! Super cute. The staff is very friendly and our waiter Fernando was a very knowledgeable and helpful. We had two seasonal drinks: La Llorona which is made out of ginger ale, piña, jicama and mezcal. I can't remember the name of the second drink but it was made out of iced tamarindo, both super delicious. Next we tried the mixed appetizer and a chorizo tlayuda. Cool place. No doubt about that. Fabulous mescal selection with all sorts of mescal cocktails. 2 of us shared a salad and glad we did because it was super large. We then asked the waiter what chicken dish to share. He guided us to a dish - can't remember the name, but for sharing - no way. It was a chicken leg, and while it was tasty, it was plain. Came with a few pieces of lettuce, shredded pickled cabbage and potato salad. For 195 pesos, it was overpriced and we left with lots of room to spare in our tummies. I have been here 4 times over the course of 2 years and I have never had a positive experience. Most recently, I arrived at the restaurant around 8:45 with a party of 4 without a reservation. We saw that the space was quite full and as we entered there was a rope up blocking off the restaurant from the entrance. I looked for someone who was working there and tried to cross the rope in order to go to the bar to ask if we could sit there instead - BIG mistake! A server promptly came up to us and yelled at us for daring to come into the restaurant. I can understand wanting to maintain order but we weren't exactly rowdy and there was no one working at the front. On each of my other visits we had very aggressive unfriendly service. Zandunga is one of the best restaurants of comida istmeña in Oaxaca. You can tell that you've done the right thing by eating here since they greet you with a free entrance of smashed fish with totopos. One of the best options is the typical dish to share, it comes with an istmeño stew, banana molotes, cheese empanadas, pica de gallo with dry shrimps and many more recipes. One of my favorite dishes is the roasted chicken that comes with two garnachas (fried little tortillas with sauce and meat), mashed potatoes with vegetables and a sour cabbage that adds a really nice contrast to the plate. All desserts are delicious but muy favorite is the one made with yams and lemon. The presentation, the flavor and the amazing service make Zandunga a restaurant that you're not gonna wanna miss. Tip: all the huipiles (tipical blouses) that are hanging on the walls are for sale. read more

It's a lovely place for a special dinner or you can just sit at the bar and have a drink. This might be my new favorite restaurant in Oaxaca! Just stopped in for lunch and had what might be the single best chicken soup and the most incredible corn tamale I have ever eaten. The service is exceptional and prices very reasonable in relation to the quality of the food.
