This place was my friend's pick for her birthday dinner. It was just the two of us and they were having trouble seating us. Prior to us, they sat several two-tops at tables that can fit four, but told us they didn't have any room for us but eventually stuck us at a tiny table in the back corner. The service overall was completely lacking, like they definitely forgot we were back here. Even the person refilling waters stopped at every table but ours. I expected better for a place with such high ratings especially for a birthday dinner. The restaurant itself is very tight packed, you may end up sitting very close to strangers. The women's bathroom lock doesn't work. Thankfully the food was pretty decent. The Thai tea was good but had soooo much ice. We started with chicken satay skewers, shrimp and veggie tempura, and steamed potstickers in red curry sauce. Seven years since I last reviewed ZA. Have dined here several times since then, always very good, but not great, not worthy of . Dined here early Sunday evening. Unfortunately no Happy Hour drink deals like Sushi Thai, which is 5 blocks away on route 41 going South. We had a large Saki for $13. Appetizer Spring rolls $7. Entrees Fried rice with 5 shrimp $21 (a bit dry and boring, had to add sauce) and Pad See Ew with shrimp $22 (good, certainly not great). Ambiance is OK, but noise level is bad when it gets crowded, especially if there is a large party of seniors shouting at each other. Service was adequate, nothing special. read more

Alternatively, the tuna tataki was fresh and artfully presented and the only reason for 3 stars. Service is pretty good, but not taking away the dirty appetizer plates is a real turn-off. Efforts on this front need to be made. As with seemingly all Asian restaurants, the cocktails are a disaster -- and "weak tasting" disasters at that.. 7 years ago my wife and I came here and I left this review, complaining about the kimchi and overall lack of stuff. Though I now feel ashamed of it, honestly, I started on Yelp, full of myself and trying to be a critiqueist of the utmost degree. Though I still standby my review of 7 whole years ago, I must revise this gawd awful mess of a review with a new one and I must say, Zen Asian BBQ is worth its 5 stars and I will tell you why: Today we had the wings with its dipping sauce, sushi and I had a bowl of ramen. The Zen Spicy Korean Goju Wings were great. We had the sauce on the side and the dipping sauce was more so sweet than spicy but it definitely was a nice match up with the wings. The cook on the wings were great, could have been longer but that's ok. The spice was coated nicely over the wings and I enjoyed them throughly. The sushi was well made. We had the vegetable roll and the tropical dragon roll. The rice was soft, the sushi melted in our mouths and that nice texture of the seaweed really tied it all together. Now, the tropical roll isn popular but maybe not for everyone, as the sweet plantains on top will throw off anyone who is a sushi purist but by all means I ask you to try it if you like fusions because it's really magical. On to the Matsusaka Ramen. The egg halves had a great tasting yolk that was almost perfectly cooked. Stupid me flipped one of the yolks in the broth and it hardened a bit so that was my fault. The angus beef is what makes this dish and it was a bit chewy like the noodles but very tasteful and even through the egg itself made the dish a bit salty, nothing a nice sip of coke cola wouldn't bring everything together. Overall, though I stand by my 3 star review from when I became a Yelper, Zen Asian BBQ has improved so much that I have to leave 5 stars because it's just so delicious now! Zen Asian BBQ has a wide variety of menu items ranging from sushi to ramen to Korean BBQ. Our party of 4 tried the seafood ramen, sashimi platter, spider roll, and rainbow roll. There was no standout among the items ordered and everything was average at best. The rice on the sushi was rather dry, the crab in the spider roll was cold and seemed to have been fried the day before, and the rainbow roll had small pieces of fish on top. The calamari in the ramen was very tough, and even the scallop was hard to cut with a fork. After a lengthy discussion with the server to identify a dry sake, we ended up with one that was too sweet. Otherwise the service was very good. The atmosphere inside is eclectic with pictures on the brick walls of superhero's and various movie characters. Went in because I saw they now serve dim sum. I got the soup dumplings. They were terrible. They are served in tiny aluminum bottoms. You can see them in the pictures. I think they were frozen because the tops were hard when I got them. They were not soft at all. I tried to pick them up with my chopstick and they stuck to the tin, I pulled and they all tore from the bottom releasing a very small amount of soup. There was no proper sag to them. They were $5.99 for 3. The beef rice rolls were good and are $6.99 for two. I got the vegetable pad Thai $16 and it was so damn sweet. I couldn't finish it. Kevin ordered the crunchy Japanese roll $12. I didn't enjoy it, my husband did. The garlic pepper calamari $13 flavor was great but it was so rubbery. I should have ordered the ramen. read more

Visited Zen Asian BBQ on a visit to the FL west coast. We were excited to try a place that had KBBQ and Japanese items. There was no wait on Monday night and we were immediately seated on one of the few bbq tables. We chose the wagyu short ribs and scallops for the bbq and then otoro nigiri, salmon zen bite and another sushi item I can't recall the name. All the seafood was great, and the grill worked well and I was surprised that we didn't smell like we had been cooking our food after leaving the place. If you're going to try ONE thing at this restaurant, make sure you give the green tea creme brûlée a try. It was THE perfect ending to this dining experience. It's easy to drive by this place because it's tucked away and looks so ambiguous but I guess that's what you call a true "hidden gem" Order the octopus the first chance you get. Even if you "don't like octopus" because I can bet that this particular version, with the amazing creamy white sauce and orange tangy sauce ying yang balance, will change your mind. The fried greens and sautéed cherry tomatoes were each much more than garnishes. Slather them in the sauce (don't let that sauce go to waste!) Well my lovely date and I shared a "drunken watermelon" which is their signature cocktail. It's huge and it's pure watermelon-y goodness and comes in an actual carved out watermelon. Our lovely waitress Mi (not sure the spelling) was also a huge highlight. She was attentive and super friendly. Also she gave us great suggestions. Anyway, we ordered the Zen Flaming sushi roll, and there's really no doubt why it's their signature rolls. I've never had ribeye in a roll and I immediately thought it wouldn't work but I was wrong. I'd like to think that I am mature enough to admit when I am! I won't give the surprise away but I'll say it's on fire, it has raw sushi, the ribeye IS tender and amazing and perfectly seared and rare (well it's as rare as you like as you get to decide when to extinguish the flame). All I can say is that it was such a delicious roll and maybe a great appetizer as well. Next we ordered the Bulgogi which I've had before and this was about as good as it gets. I immediately liked it from the first bite to the last and I would order it again. Flavor is a flawless 10! Overall it was such a great experience. The place is hip and has a cool design, the menu is creative and executed very well, and the service is friendly and as it should be for a fine dining experience. I really only give reviews for places that leave me stunned with how good they are, or places that are SO disappointing that I think they should be shut down. This was unfortunately the latter. Biggest complaint has to be the overall health/sanitation and atmosphere. When seated, all our party's plates were clearly unwashed and had mystery liquids, hair, and spots all over them. The tables feel sticky and unwashed (WE WEREN'T EVEN SITTING BY THE KOREAN BBQ AND THE TABLES WERE STILL STICKY), and they have a pee-smelling incense burning in the front of the restaurant. Prices were ok, but nothing prepared us for the food quality. Do not I repeat DO NOT get any buns or dim sum! The buns were clearly frozen, reheated, and then up-charged for profit. I think this was the absolute worst Asian restaurant I've been to in recent memory. If you are a hungry customer, go elsewhere. If you are a health inspector, please come here and try! read more

All of their ramen is great, and the personal BBQ experience is a must-try if you haven't tried it before. The seating is a little close together and you can tend to hear other people's conversations but the food makes up for it. The wagyu beef is AMAZING. And their boba tea is to die for. I wouldn't recommend getting their alcoholic beverages while dining in because they're pretty expensive and not strong, but the hot sake is pretty decent. This is a nice, airy, bright space with a sushi bar, sushi chefs working in the open, worn wooden tables and lacquered chairs. I love a good Korean barbecue, especially bulgogi. To get the full BBQ experience at Zen, you need to sit at one of the long BBQ tables, but I was happy when I found I could get a bento box that included this delectable spicy treat. My brother was all about the sushi, and ordered a spider roll. We shared Crispy Gyoza which, unfortunately, was the best part of the meal. My Korean Bento Box contained Chicken Pad Thai, Stirfried veggies, Beef Bulgogi, and three pieces of sushi (chef's choice). Let's start there. I had two pieces of nigiri, one salmon and one tuna, and the fish was fresh and nice. The sushi roll piece was smoked eel, which I detest. Most disappointing was the bulgogi; the beef was dry and appeared sliced. But it quickly deteriorated to mush as I stirred it up, and the mush was flavorless. Instead of a warm, smoky, juicy BBQ dish it was an unpleasant texture and without spices. So, I had two more dishes to try to salvage the meal. The stir fry was some large pieces of cabbage and carrot slices that had been cooked to death, leaving them flabby and soft and - wait for it - flavorless. Can Pad Thai be a bland dish as well? Yes. Yes it can. The chicken tasted boiled, there was no sauce, and I ended up leaving most of the food on my plate. How's the sushi? My brother got a spider roll which was about half the size of a typical roll, so he also ordered a crunchy crab roll as well. He said both were just okay, but quite small. If you want Korean BBQ avoid this place. The only "Korean bbq" anything that they have is the grilling pit at your table. The portions are extremely small and incredibly expensive. Nothing like Korean BBQ. The server put the grill on super high to start and all the butter she put on was burnt to a crisp almost instantly. When I put the beef on, it was almost instant cooked. We ended up turning the grill down ourselves. The only good part was she brought are check once we asked and there was no delay in payment. Again, don't waste your money here. Enjoyed the watermelon cocktail- refreshing and well presented. Also had the Pad Thai, again great presentation, the noodles were wrapped in a crepe of some kind. The Pad Thai itself was ok, I've had better. The side mango salad was good too. Very refreshing as well. 4 1/2 stars. Have to give credit to my 14 year old who picked this place on Yelp (if course)! We both really enjoyed our experience here. We did not have a reservation but we received a warm welcome from the hostess who seared us right away. We were asked if we wanted a regular or hibachi table and we picked the hibachi. We started with a couple of appetizers. Both were excellent! The Salmon Nacho's had ocean fresh salmon, buttery smooth salmon. There were plenty of salmon cubes on tasty rice cakes. I have eaten a lot of Brussel Sprouts but these were some of the best I have had. The Brussels were nice and crispy. The addition of bacon and candied nuts made these Brussels a mouth watering mix of sweet and savory. For our mains we got to cook our own. We shared orders of Beef Bulgogi and Spicy Pork Bulgogi. The thin marinated slices meat arrived to the table raw and we cooked it on the hibachi. Both types of meet were very good but if I had to say which I preferred, it was the Beef. Our server was also very sweet. He was always checking in on us to make sure everything was okay. We had a couple of issues with the hibachi but our server was always there to help us. Enjoyed the atmosphere here as well. The place has an industrial feel, but the low lighting and warm colors make it feel warm. Zen Asian Barbecue is appropriate for a night out with the girls, date night, or even a night out out with with your son! So glad we tried it! read more

I keep trying this place hoping to have a good meal but every time I come, I leave seriously disappointed. If I could split the stars, I would give 1 star for the sushi, 2 stars for service, and 5 stars for the Ramen Soup. The Yellowtail Sushi was so foul I ended up spitting it out. I have never seen Yellowtail with red on it. It almost looked like fat or something. The consistency of the red part was spongy and just plain nasty. I ended up cutting off the red parts and eating the rest. The sushi is expensive and didn't want to waste money which is why I ate it. My friend found a bone in her Salmon. The waitress had to keep stepping away from the table to cough and when she came over to our table, was talking right next to my face. Having just gotten over a bug myself, I leaned away from her. I recently tried the KOREAN WAGYU STEW AND OMG, DELICIOUS DOESNT EVEN START TO DESCRIBE THIS! The sauce was light and sweet but not too sweet with good flavor. The wagyu was fall apart in your mouth and the veggies had a nice crunch. I can't wait to order it again. I have visited Zen numerous times for both lunches and dinners since the reviews from 2016, and so I can say that it has not been isolated incidents that both the service and food levels have declined. Sometime, it does take a while to be greeted by the entrance, so I take the habit of walking directly into the restaurant to make sure I can wave someone down to seat me. The service is extremely slow, and there seems to be some language barrier at times. Sometimes, it takes forever to get a water-refill, or even getting a check. Ramen: pork & seafood: this has gone down in quality and quantity. Yes, I understand that the ramen soup is prepared in advance, and heated up upon ordering - please please heat it up to a full boil before serving, which doesn't always happen. Also, sometimes the pre-measured broth doesn't even fill close to 3/4 of the bowl. The noodles clumped together into one large ball one time - the chef (or cook) didn't bother to boil the noodles properly... so imagine luke-warm ramen with clumped up noodles... yuck... Upon mentioning, Zen did cook up a replacement. The lamb curry flavor is good, but the lamb chops are not trimmed properly, so there will be large pieces of fat and gristle. The potato isn't always cooked all the way through, so I would take it home and heat it up again. The green tea creme brûlée remains a huge hit - this has been the most consistent item so far. Please conduct a re-training of your service staff - they seem very stressed and busy all the time, even when the restaurant isn't full. Also, what's going on in the kitchen? We had been here a few times as we like their food and the ambient. If you want to do the Korean BBQ at the table, you need at least two orders to start the grill. The portion was a bit small but the meat was marinated good and flavorful. The last couple times we came for sushi and appetizers. We love the flaming roll. It was one of a kind. The flame was cool to watch and the smoky flavor was perfect with the rib eye. They have a big sushi roll menu and everything that we tried was great. This was our family's first experience with Korean BBQ, but it won't be our last! The staff here was very friendly and helpful, and always seemed to be around just when we needed something. If you visit, I would definitely try the Korean BBQ option, where you'll get to grill your own meat and veggies on a grill in the center of the table. You choose the type of meats & amounts. We had 2 meats for 3 adults and it was more than enough. I wouldn't get the chicken again simply because the raw chicken "juices" were dripping all over off the plate, table, etc - and I don't want to risk it getting mixed with cooked foods. I come here all the time and rave about it to all my friends, but never thought to write a review until I was called out on my BS. So here I am. What can I say? To start with it's the best Asian in Naples. Hands down. The food is so fresh, so tasty, and so authentic that I find myself here several times a week. They have Asahi beer. The restaurant is very vegan friendly. It's a mix of authentic Thai, Korean, and Japanese, somehow, all executed well. The curries, sushi, and hot pots are all delicious. I'm not a Korean barbecue fan, but they have too, if you're into it. My non vegan friends swear by it. My go to meal is an asahi, an avocado roll, maybe a house salad, and one of the curries on the menu with just vegetables and no meat. I've been here over 20 times and never had a bad meal. Hard to believe. So many times with restaurants, I get my hopes up after a great experience, only to go back again and be let down. Not here (knock on wood). Highly recommended. Enjoy! read more
