Came here because I wanted some basic American Chinese food when I was in town on business. I ordered the Beef and Broccoli dinner combo that came with an egg roll and fried rice. I also added a small Hot and Sour soup. The food was VERY good. The beef in the Beef and Broccoli was nice and tender, the broccoli not undercooked and not cooked to mush. I loved it. I have gone here many times in the past and usually the food was pretty good, the last time I went there I had the steamed potstickers and I have to say they were tasteless, and with the less then 1oz of plum sauce I was given I couldn't save the tasteless potstickers, the wonton soup was terrible, the wontons had the smallest amount of filling in them and that's all that was in the soup, I think with a little help this could be a much better soup, like a little meat, maybe sliced hard boiled egg, some diced chives would bring some flavor, I wasn't happy, but some people my like an extremely bland wonton soup, personally I'm more about flavor, I wasn't happy with my food on this visit, I think the cook has given up, I hate to say it but I'm moving on to another place. read more

We've been enjoying this place for years, but lately, the prices have gone way up and the quality of the product gone down: less food, less meat, etc. for more money. They also charge the fee for using a credit card but if you use a debit they don't charge. By the way, charging that fee for a debit card is illegal and if any store/restaurant you visit does charge you for using debit, you can report them. We don't order from Zen house very much because of these issues, sad to say. read more

We have tried several Chinese takeout places and for Bolingbrook, this one is our favorite but lately the prices continue to climb. We don't order from them as much because it's too expensive. They will pass on the fee if you use a credit card BUT NOT FOR DEBIT. Warning: if an establishment does charge for a debit card tell them it's against the law. I checked it out on reputable sites and consulted with my banker already. If they do charge you for debit and you keep your receipt, you can send it to VISA and report them. read more

Do you like paying for air? This is the place! My shrimp was 2/3 air and roughly 1/3 flattened shrimp! The chicken fried rice had ZERO chicken in it and was mostly filler of peas, and a ton on onions plus others. Shrimp egg roll had maaaaaybe 3 shrimp in it altogether. Mostly cabbage filler, yuck. Sesame chicken was tough to eat. It seemed microwaved and disgusting. Was swimming, and I mean swimming in sauce. A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT!! GENERAL TSO-TSO This spot in Bolingbrook has underwhelming Chinese takeout, but it'll do in a pinch. Upon moving to the area earlier this year, I did a quick search for businesses nearby and the results included a Buona Beef (hooray!), a landscaping supply company, and this neighborhood takeout place. Zen House is in a dinky strip mall off of Lily Cache & Weber Rd; they're carryout only, even in non-covid times. We called in an order on 12/4/20 and picked it up about 30 minutes later. Wonton soup ($3.25) and egg drop soup ($3) were fine, hot & sour soup ($3.25) was an amalgamation of the latter plus a bunch of mushrooms and didn't sit well with me. No more of that for this guy. The crab rangoon (8 for $7) were a tasty ripoff--100% cream cheese, 0% crab. Potstickers (8 for $7) come with a ginger soy dipping sauce and can be steamed or pan-fried by request. If you're feeding a group of 3-4, the Pao Pao combination is a good deal for $16 (2x each of egg roll, crab rangoon, bbq spare rib, beef teriyaki, chicken wing and shrimp toast). My Szechuan chicken ($11) was alright, nothing too special. My wife's pepper steak w/onion ($12) looked like it came from a different part of the same creature as my entrée, disguised in a dark sauce. You can upgrade white rice to fried rice for an extra $2. Some takeout places give out almond cookies with bigger orders, sadly ZH is not among them. Zen House does, however, hold the distinction of being the very first restaurant we ordered from on moving day (coincidentally, leftover Chinese was also the first thing my wife threw out of the new house's fridge). * TL;DR * For the money, you could do worse. You could of course, do better--Golden Bowl (Westmont) and New Star (Elmwood Park), par exemple. Sure, half of the pork/chicken/beef entrees here are mercurial in nature, and the unnaturally vibrant sweet 'n sour sauce is nothing more than corn syrup + red dye...... but aren't those things part of the reason why Chinese takeout is so timeless? Zen House is average in that regard, they're not shattering any barriers. We'll likely order from them at a point in the future, if only because of the convenience of proximity. read more

Very good food. I had Mongolian beef and my wife had the BBQ pork. The egg rolls and fried rice came with it. The rice was OK. Didn't have much flavor. Yet, the egg rolls were fantastic. The entrees were great. My Mongolian beef had tender beef and had a great sauce. I tried the bbq pork and we both agreed it was one of the best. Service was incredible. They made sure we were satisfied with everything. We didn't like the tea. Probably because it wasn't green or black tea like we are use to. The hot tea is free with dinner. Will go back. Not great, but still better than most of Bolingbrook's Chinese restaurants. Won Ton soup had flavor, but missing an egg and pork that was in Golden Chopstick's soup, which was, and still is, the best. Mongolian Beef on menu states it comes on rice noodles (Those whit crunchy Styrofoam kind of noodles) - It did not come with any, and that's the best way to sop up and savor the sauce. Will most likely give them another try, but so far, they are just OK - nothing to brag about. read more

This is super close to my house, but just not my favorite Chinese spot. We ordered from here on a Monday because Sesame Chinese is closed. It is quite pricey. The shrimp egg rolls were meh. Chicken teriyaki sticks were good, and Sesame chicken was tasty. In my opinion, this isn't the place to replace a Golden Chopsticks craving. We ordered Orange chicken. The texture was rubbery, like it was warmed up from yesterday. It was also difficult to find any Chicken. It was all breading. The egg rolls were not crunchy. They were rubbery as well. Shrimp was good in the Shrimp fried rice, but there was not much of it. The rice itself had very little else in it besides a few peas and carrots. I kept it simple and ordered a basic lunch combo: Chicken egg foo young. This was the first time in my life that I've received egg foo young without bean sprouts. It was just a patty formed of egg and chopped onions Also it was extremely greasy. The fried rice had peas and carrots; no spring onions and bean sprouts. It was completely tasteless and...greasy. The little fingerling egg roll was all wrap no filling and greasy. The only item that had any hint of flavor was the crab rangoon but , it was.. wait for it.. Greasy. I ordered the C.21 Chicken with Vegetables dinner combination. The pork egg roll was one of the best egg rolls I've ever had. The Chicken w/ vegetables was very good, their website says they do not use MSG, so the food wasn't super salty, it tasted more natural (which some people would say bland) but I thought it was good. Ever since moving out here we've been searching for our go-to take-out place, and I think we've finally found it! The place is a little whole-in-the-wall-y but the food was great. OMG they have the BEST fried rice! I cannot tell everyone enough good things about their food. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the steamed veggies also. If you are looking for a good way to try them out order the cheap, cheap lunch specials. They also have combo dinner specials and I get those, eat half and have leftovers for the next day. Egg rolls are just fried enough and are very tasty. No delivery but it is worth picking it up yourself. We go to polish deli a few doors down and decided we had to give it a try. We did carry out, they have a small seating area but closed for Covid. The staff was very friendly and fast service. I sooooo wanted to like the food but was sadly disappointed for the most part. The house fried rice was very bland and the shrimp in there were overpowering taste of previously dehydrated and reconstituted shrimp. Worst I've ever had. The crab Rangoon's were overly sweet and lack of crab flavor. One shining dish was their combination kungpao dish. Not as spicy as most and a mild sauce but good flavor and the meats were very good as well. Want to give them a second chance but not sure we will. read more
