1st of all the service was excellent. Our waiters went above & beyond. The food was good but the sashimi appetizers were unconventional... the Tai Ume was waaay too sour for me... my hubby however, loved it. The Yuzu Hirame was too creamy & weird for me, but again, my hubby liked it. I grew up with boring plain sashimi so I guess my palate is old LOL. Chicken teri lunch was a good portion & my husband enjoyed his sashimi lunch. The one downside was the miso soup. Guys, if this is an upscale restaurant you gotta COOK your miso soup. As a Japanese raised in Japan I was shocked to get re-heated soup with cold tofu & instant seaweed. I mean, what? Come on. Let's COOK all the ingredients. And no "grow-in-the-water" seaweed. Let's get the real stuff.
was able to get a last minute reservation here for a weekend dinner and everything was so good! highly recommend getting the uni pasta off their special menu and trying some of their many rolls. the menu is very extensive so i'll definitely come back to try more!
Pricey, but very fresh and delicious. Almost everything we ordered was excellent and definitely high quality. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the service was extremely slow. It was a Sunday night on Ventura Blvd, so I understand it was busy, but service took way too long, refills on drinks, the food, asking how everything was, way longer than expected. Also, parking isn't great, it's street parking only, which can be a hassle.
Came here for date night! Zen Toro is more of a fusion Japanese sushi place that also does izakaya really well. We enjoyed trying multiple sashimi tasting platters as well as the grilled beef tongue skewers, lamb skewers, and spicy yellowtail crispy rice. Service was great since we were the only ones dining when it opened, and there were plenty of waitresses. Food came out relatively quickly, but for the same price point, I've had better in Studio City. This restaurant would add caviar as toppings, but it didn't really add much to the dishes. The highlight of the night for me was ironically the beef tongue which I ordered more of after my first order, and for my hubby, it was the lamb, even though this restaurant specializes in sushi lol. Great to have another local sushi restaurant in Sherman Oaks! Will be back!
Zen Toro is officially my new favorite sushi spot in LA. It's intimate and a cute spot for a date night or even a night out with friends. The staff were friendly and great service as well. You can make reservations through yelp, which I would recommend doing, especially on a weekend as it's quite an intimate space and it a popular place. We started off with the spicy tuna crispy rice, which was crispy and flavorful. We then had the Negi Taku roll which was my favorite roll of the night. The toro was so fresh and flavorful. If it was cheaper I would order way more of it. We also ordered three other rolls which were better in portion size and had a nice citrusy touch to them. Overall, everything was delicious and I can't wait to come back and try more items. I should note that it is slightly on the pricier end, so it's not an everyday sushi spot but, great for a nice treat once in a while.

I almost don't want to submit a review so we can gate keep this place to ourselves. We wandered in randomly on a Friday night and will continue to come back any chance we get. The food, the staff, the amtosphere were all great. Truly some of the best sushi I've had. Highly recommend!

Amazing Fresh Sushi. All you sushi lovers will not regret! Entire staff working tremendously all the servers were great, smiling, joking, and loading up tables in a heartbeat. Well lit and extremely loud environment (Great for Kids). The sushi was very well prepared and presented. Must try the Baked Lobster Roll. Skip the Crispy Tempura Brussel Sprout.

I had a great experience at Sushi Zen Toro. The moment the dishes arrived, you could tell a lot of care went into the presentation. Each plate looked like a piece of art--everything was neatly arranged, balanced in color, and visually inviting. The sushi itself was beautifully plated. The fish had a fresh, vibrant shine, and the cuts were clean and precise. Garnishes like such as microgreens, and wasabi were placed thoughtfully, not just for decoration but to complement the dish. Even the simplest rolls looked elegant, with tight, uniform shapes and a nice contrast between ingredients. Overall, Sushi Zen Toro delivers both in flavor and presentation. If you appreciate sushi that looks as good as it tastes, this place is definitely worth visiting. read more

I really love this place from the service to the food. It was an exceptional dinner. I had a reservation and they seated right away. Sushi was very fresh and tasty. My favorite was the yellowtail sashimi with garlic, blue crab handroll, double G roll and the seabass midori roll. Definitely would come back and try so many other items on the menu that sounded fantastic. read more

We finally made it in to this restaurant. When we stepped in we were pleasantly surprised at the ambiance and the staff. We had a warm greeting from Jeff. He also brought me a tool for the purse. That's always a plus for me. Our server Eve was a very pleasant young lady. Both Jeff and Rudy are funny. With that kind of service you know the food will have to be great and it was. We ordered way too much but luckily I was hungry . We had their Chilean SeaBass Soup, Edamame, 2 skewers, Amberjack Carpaccio Sashimi, King Salmon Teriyaki with two combos. 2 stars is for the other server who came and apologized for forgetting our order cuz our main server acted like he memorized everything and Forgot a few yakitori items. Ambience- it's a very small restaurant and felt very blah/boring/stiff - not welcoming & not cozy. Food wise - the kushiyaki skewers were super sweet that it was so bad. Imagine chicken liver that is super sweet - you'd think you're eating a dessert. Yuk. The popcorn chicken - the sauce was again so sweet and bland. It felt like just Mayo and food coloring. The lamb skewers- don't even bother! The albacore slices with crispy onion was ok. I don't think I would ever go back to this place. Valley parking only at the back of the restaurant. read more
My bf and I used to come here before they changed ownership! This used to be Izakaya M and had fantastic Yakitori. We didn't even realize that it had changed till we walked in! Completely walked past the new sign and didn't notice till after. The vibes were different walking in, fancier almost. We were greeted by all the staff and got to choose between bar or table seating, we chose table. They offered hot towels and that's when I knew something was different! It was very nice, especially since we had to walk about a block in the cold because of the lack of parking along Ventura. It was a Tuesday night and got there maybe around 7pm ish? Surprised to see only two other couples in there, wasn't busy at all. Ended up just being us and one other family towards the end. We sat down and ordered food, mostly Yakitori (the beef tongue is an absolute must!! Perfect fat - meat ratio). I also saw Yellowtail Carpaccio with crunchy garlic and crispy onions with the usual ponzu but man that was right up my alley!! Came out rather quick and love that the slices are thin. Sometimes it can be too much if they are thick slices. Honestly, perfection. Absolutely delicious and almost ordered a second one!! The yakitori took a loooong time to come out and they came out like one by one (per meat choice) which seemed a bit odd. When we ordered it before, they had everything on basically the same plate. We ordered a little more towards the end (just two more yakitori) and I swear it took so long. Especially for being the only party ordering. The other family had already finished their order. Very odd and felt like we were waiting too long for such small items. Regardless, very good if you have nowhere else to be and staff are very friendly. Absolutely love this place. It's somewhat new. Definitely check it out! They are very nice there too. The sushi was so fresh and flavorful, probably one of my top 4 sushi spots in all of Los Angeles the fatty tuna belly, the salmon look below at the pictures of what I got and definitely show them and for that. The best sushi I've had in a long time. I have my 3 regular sushi favorites but wanted to try somewhere new and I'm so happy I did! Everything was super fresh, the service was attentive and kind. The beauty roll & Lemon rolls were our favorites. However the prime rib robata and salmon hand roll with crispy onions was unreal. It's a relatively small place so I'm happy we were seated quickly and the noise level was perfect. A lot of these smaller places echo and make it miserable to enjoy a meal. I came from SF to visit family back in the valley and took them to this cute but unassuming spot for lunch on a weekday because it wasn't too packed. Little did I know I was going to be so pleasantly surprised by how tasty everything was! I heard they changed owners and wanted to give everything a try. From the yakitori menu (must try: lamb chop and Kobe beef... ) to the bomb fresh fish to the assortment of sake cocktails, I was floored yall. As a certified city girl, I've had my fair share of fish and I have to give it to them, the chefs selection of nigiri was so bomb and flavorful I didn't have to dip into wasabi or soy sauce! Would take this over most omakase sets in SF and NY. Such pleasant and attentive staff too, I felt like we were having a privately hosted dinner party. Went here for a soft opening to try out a new spot near our house. Ambiance: it's nice, clean, typical sushi restaurant vibe. I know some ppl dress up to eat for a restaurant but as long as you can pay that's all that matters. Place: I don't understand what ppl are complaining and this place should have a higher star. Clearly it's not the same as the previous "restaurant" that was here but that's before... hence new name soo whatever. Food: I love the sushi here. Some people probably didn't know what to order and obviously didn't like it, but if you're looking for "California roll" maybe this is not the place for you... we ordered: ohagi, uni toast with black truffle, jumbo scallops sushi, uni sushi, yamakake, the best lamb chops ever, truffle edemame, shishito peppers and other foods but it was great! We went to zen toro for the first time. Ever single roll was so delicious. Even the edamame had a level of flavor I've never had before. I asked the chef to make me something unique and he didn't not disappoint. Hands down the best sushi restaurant on sushi row. read more
