Berkeley, California vibes in the middle of Zürich. If I could pick one place in Zürich to call "my…read moreliving room," it would be Kasheme. Walking in felt like stumbling into a post-hippie apartment that just happens to have world-class bartenders and a killer sound system. Shelves of vinyl, plants everywhere, low lighting, and lots of little nooks and couches make it insanely cozy and easy to settle in for hours. The music is the real heartbeat here - deep, eclectic sets that move from jazz and soul to more underground sounds, never the usual generic club playlist. It's very much a listening bar: you feel like people actually come to hear what's being played, not just to have background noise. Cocktails are excellent and made with care - the kind of place where the bartenders are happy to riff on your preferences and mix something off-menu. Everyone behind the bar was friendly, relaxed, and clearly loves being there, which matches what a lot of other reviewers say about the staff and the warm, "home away from home" vibe.

It's just a regular book store, but something about Orell Fussli is special. Maybe because the books are in German, and it's multiple stories and fun to ride the elevator. Maybe it's because there are nice couches around to sit and read the books, or maybe because there's a Starbucks too so you can have a coffee while you're enjoying your book. I don't know, but I love it. When things were a bit rough a month ago I'd just come here, and everything bad would go away. Orell Fussli is the perfect medicine. :) It's also right in the middle of Zurich. If you're wanting an English book store there's another Orell Fussli English down the street. But I'm so over English books, those were so yesterday. just kidding I've bought a few things from here. The Lion King DVD in German, a German cook book, a calendar, and a few cards. My favorite shop in Zurich!…read more The way the shop is arranged is part minimal chic, part eclectic; Townhouse is one of those rare shops that make you want to stay for ages and and just browse, and chat, and buy one of everything (at least.) All products that run under the Townhouse label are designed and/or produced in Zurich and surroundings, and the store owners frequently work with local artists. The range is complemented by handpicked items from international brands that you won't find anywhere else in Zurich like Heeley Eau de Parfum, Archie Grand or Jewelberry. There are lots of lovely and hard-to-find items here. Another thing I love about Townhouse is that they are always incredibly welcoming and helpful, no matter if you just want to browse or how much or how little you end up buying; this is no small feat in Zurich, where shop owners/assistants are often a little grumpy or not very welcoming.

If I didn't know any better, then I'd say that the space may have been converted from a house many moons ago. From the street, one enters into the fiction room. Directly next to the fiction area seemed to be a room consisting mostly of biography and music, and beyond both of those front spaces is the used book room at the back of the shop. There are tables set-up in each space with book displays, antique books are tucked here and there, and, in the used book area, stands a chair for one to plop down in while thumbing through second-hand reads. pile of books reminds me of independent bookshops in uni-towns across the US, and I love it. If one is keen on finding both new and used books, both bestseller and obscure titles, then a visit to POB is worth one's time. POB also holds singer/songwriter musical events either out front during warmer months, or, in the winter season, in one of the front rooms of the book shop. Note: POB is closed from 13.00-15.00 Monday through Friday.

This store really has the allure of an New York sneakerstore. You find a lot, and special stuff as well. The store has two floors. But you really have to go inside. It looks actually small from the outside. But once inside it looks big and it is big. The staff is friendly and doesn't bother you too much. One negative thing: they didn't have a lot in my size (US: 12). But maybe its because its popular ;)
