My son and and his girlfriend have me a gift certificate to Zui Tea for Christmas. They specifically researched the Austin area for tea shops as they are currently living in Chicago and wanted me to enjoy something local. They know how much I love tea and wanted to make sure I would be happy with their choice. While they were visiting for the holidays they wanted to actually visit the shop with me. Today we stopped in...my first time to visit. I walked in and thought it was quite nice. They do have Qatar very nice selection of teas. I also loved the sample pouches. We spent a good 30 minutes checking things out. We made sure to smell the various teas and blends. I picked out a couple of tins and several sample pouches. I made sure to select enough items that would use up the gift certificate. When we went to check out they had no idea how to process the gift certificate and said they didn't know what to do. They advised me the owner was very particular payment and they would need to check with them before they could take the gift certificate. They didn't call or do anything to help me. They finally said I should just use it online. We left...without any tea. I was shocked at how unwilling the staff was to help me. They seemed lost and unwilling to try and help me out. Tonight I went online to use my gift certificate. One of the teas I had selected in the store was not even available online. AND now I have to pay shipping. This whole experience had been horrible. I can assure you if I had not have had a gift certificate where I was pretty much forced into purchasing something from Zhi, I would have gone elsewhere. When the tea comes in...I sure hope it wows me because nothing of this experience has come close to doing so yet. Tea may be their specialty but customer service is not. read more

I visited Zhi Tea for the first time today and the first thing I noticed was how fragrant and delicious it smelled inside! The building on the outside doesn't stand out as particularly noticeable, but the inside is quite cozy and the fragrance of the tea permeates every nook and cranny of the building. One thing I very much appreciated was that each tea had a sample tin you could smell prior to ordering a pot or purchasing any tea. The teas were all located to the right of the entrance and organized by type, which made finding my favorites very easy. Everything looked gorgeous, and there were even tea sets available to purchase in addition to the tea leaves and sachets. All in all, it was very clean and well organized as well as featuring my favorite thing in the world - TEA!! I ended up ordering a pot of the Raspberry Pecan, and sadly it just did not have the full-bodied flavor I was hoping it would. I was able to detect notes of the raspberry and pecan, but they were very faint hints of flavor. In addition, our tea timer was broken and that was a little bit of a nuisance as we kept waiting for the sand to run out until we realized it was stuck. Not a big deal, but the taste of my tea was a little disappointing because I do tend to like my teas to have strong flavor. The main reason I was not exactly enthused about my experience was actually the employee at the counter. It seemed as though he wanted nothing to do with us and although he was incredibly prompt and efficient about everything, he just didn't come across as particularly friendly. I'm not sure if he was having a rough day, but besides being greeted initially and him telling us when the teas would be ready, I don't think he said anything at all. As an empath, I was definitely aware of how it brought down not only our spirits, but also those of the other guests that came in while we were there. I'm not sure I will come here again to try more teas, but if I do, I hope the employees are a bit friendlier! read more

Just what I was searching for! : ) I kept finding bubble tea places, and Chinese food restaurants when what I really wanted when I searched for a "Tea Shop" or "Tea House" was a fantastic place like THIS! This is a wonderful tea shop with a huge selection of high quality loose leaf teas, that also serves brewed tea that you can stay and sip, or take to go! I love the way they have the shop set up, very easy to browse and a wall of loose leaf tea sample bags. I am so impressed by the amount of different Oolong teas they carry. Came here to buy a Christmas gift for our grandparents. They had a wonderful selection of teas, and each shelf has little sample tins attached so that you can smell the teas. They sell all of their teas in a lot of different sizes - from sample pouches to pound bags. They have loose leaf and bagged teas plus a bunch of super cute tea pots and tea paraphernalia. In addition to the retail set up, there is a cute cafe area where you can enjoy a hot cuppa. They even had a basket of toys for kids! I liked the snack selection as well. Locally made stroopwafels and tea infused chocolates among other things. Bathroom was clean and plenty of parking. read more

I used to be a..gasp...Tazo tea or Lipton tea drinker (cringe) for most of my life....that is until I accidentally discovered Zhi tea. Oddly enough, my experience with Zhi tea was actually in North Carolina at a Marie Antoinette movie party at Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh. The event was called Afternoon tea and they were playing the Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. The menu consisted of three tea choices and some tea sandwiches and mini eclairs. I went into the theater a sad, tea bag dust drinker not knowing my tea existence would be changed forever. 15 minutes into the movie, they brought out the first round of tea. Zhi's Sweet Texas Dreams. side note: I had lived in Texas up until I was 26 years old before eventually ending up in NC. When people ask me where I am from I am always conflicted and say Texas even though I have not lived there in years. I miss a lot of things about Texas-especially the food. If it is even Texas related I am all over that ish. So Sweet Texas Dreams was already my favorite tea before I even tried it. The tea was INCREDIBLE. I stopped and looked down on my tea like what magic is this? Is this liquid gold? Then they brought in Restless Blend...oh my gahhh...tiny little cherubs flew out of the tea cup and I transcended space and time....it was AHHmazing. The last tea was Ambrosia White Tea..so flavorful. As soon as I got home I looked up Zhi tea and saw they were based in Austin, TX. Did I mention my Texas obsession? These are my people. That explains why the tea is so good-its from Texas. Duh. I ordered a few teas and waited anxiously in the mail. When I opened the box, my beautiful Texas teas awaited me, and a dance party violently erupted in my apt. I am proud to say I am now an honorary member of the Zhi tea fandom. If you like baby angels, ascending to heaven, and David Bowie dance parties, this tea is for you. AND its Texas Tea. read more

My beau and I are what you might call tea fanatics. He's huge into the loose leaf teas and knows all the temperatures in which to brew, he's becoming quite the tea sommelier. He's also a fan of the Forlife band brewing pots. So, for his birthday, I wanted to get him the Forlife cold brew for delicious iced teas. The brand website was out of the item, therefore I turned to where I turn for most products in my life - amazon.com. They of course had this item from an independent seller - Zhi Tea. I selected my Mist iced tea jug and added it to my cart. Ah, what a great birthday find. But alas - Zhi's owner e-mailed me saying that they were out! Egads! He said if I would wait about 2 weeks, he'd be able to send me one as soon as they came in, with free bonus tea. But, my panic was quickly thwarted with a second e-mail saying that there was ONE left. And it was mine, all mine! I was so excited because I knew that this was going to make a great gift. I saw that they included samples with your order, so as I was communicating with Jeffrey, the aforementioned owner, I noted that they had a grapefruit sencha that I know my guy would love, and if it was available, could they please send me that as one of the samples. He happily obliged. A few days later, my tea treats arrived. It was very well packaged, and three glorious samples awaited - Austin Breakfast, Tropical Green and a White Pomegranate. What shocked me most was that included in my package was a hand written note thanking me for my first order. Wow. How awesome and what a lovely gesture. A+ for that. I wrapped up the goodies and awaited to bestow them upon my manly tea drinking dude. I was sad that there was no grapefruit sencha, so I e-mailed Jeffrey asking if I could just order a small amount. He felt bad that it wasn't included in the regular order so he sent me the sample - for free! Squee! And it arrived with another hand written note. This place is the bomb diggity. He LOVED the Forlife glass tea jug. It's very cool how this thing works. You can see all the pretty tea leaves and herbs in the clear glass and the strainer catches it as you pour so you only get refreshing tea. Mmmmmmm! He LOVED the Austin Breakfast, and will be ordering that soon. I thought the White tea was delicious and the tropical green divine. On top of that, all the teas just smell so heavenly. The grapefruit sencha was also a hit - and I HATE grapefruit. The teas are beautifully packaged, will give you brewing instructions, and I love that you can see the tea right in the package. I will absolutely be ordering from this place again. Impressed a thousand times over. If I am ever in the Austin area, I will for sure be stopping in. Too bad I'm about 1,800 miles away. Sigh. This is a tea lover's haven! I dragged Eric R. here on our 2 day stint in ATX because it had been bookmarked for over a year. I was fortunate to get him to agree to sit in a chair and chill while I talked tea with the owner and sniffed as many tea samples as I could. We checked in on yelp and got free tea to drink - I chose White Blueberry for Eric and got ginger peach oolong for myself. All of the tea smelled fantastic, but in the end I selected a nice tin of Fredericksburg peach (black), Ginger Peach Oolong sample bag, White Blueberry sample bag, and a sample of Masala Chai for our friend who we were hanging out with in Austin. Ever since I found out Zhi existed I liked it. Back for my second visit confirms the hunch. The outdoor 'patio' is actually a huge backyard with lovely trees providing shade, and an assortment of yard furniture. I had it to myself for hours - delightful! I have not sampled any of the tea I have gotten yet, but look forward to 5 packages of various green teas (Cloud and Mist, Gyokuro, Kukicha, Tropical Green and Pink Grapefruit Sencha) that I purchased. The tea leaves looked to be of better quality and lower cost than some of the chain tea stores. Zhi TEA!!!! I personally do not drink tea, BUT my boyfriend loves tea. I've been here so many times just for moral support for him, so I thought I'd write a review. This small little shop is adorable. Every time I walk in, I immediately get that mellow, chill, relaxed vibe. Kinda like how cats are just chill and mellow. It's nice. There are SO MANY options. So many options in fact, that my boyfriend needs a run down on everything every time we come here!!! But it always works out because the people that work here are SO sweet. There is this one chick that is petite framed with short hair that is always so helpful and patient with my boyfriend's questions. I love her, she's great. Also, last time, we got a free cup of their cold brew which again, I don't like tea but I still thought it was sweet of them to give us a cup FA FREE. You've got to check out their backyard/outdoor seating. They have a swing bench!!!!! It's so cute and peaceful. They also have a really cool painting of a dragon on the wall, I'll post a pic next time we go. I recommend going to this place if you're an avid tea drinker. The A-mazing: The tea!!! The tea is absolutely delicious, and for two people you can easily share a pitcher and enjoy some much needed tea time. My favorite was the cherry sencha. Honestly, the tea is the BEST thing here, and would be the only reason for my return. I also appreciate how you can get a sample or tin of the tea you purchase here, so you can bring home some tea goodness. The TEA-rrible service: Honestly, the customer service was one of the worst I've encountered. The gentleman seemed not to care, very unenthused, and when I would see a customer come to the counter they would wait at least 5 minutes or longer until he'd come out from the kitchen to acknowledge/help them. Most of the time, he was in the kitchen (the place was empty at the time except for our group and a few customers that would get tea to go), but I would assume the person would be outside in case there are customers coming in (which there were). I will say this, he knows how to make tea, so that's definitely a plus on his part. At first I asked if they could do the tea sampler (on the menu), he had stated no without a follow-up reason as to why they couldn't do it today. Then we looked at the menu and chose. During this time, I asked about the sweetners to use in the tea and he had stated, "We don't sweeten it here." Which was fine, but I was very confused when the sign literally says, "Pick your tea, pick your sweetner..." Later, I found out from my friend they had a tray of sweetner in the back which he failed to mention. Then between our group we purchased about 2 pitchers and used up the sweetner syrup between us which was about 6-8 glasses worth of tea. I asked if we could do a refill on the syrup and he stated, "No, you used it all." It just seemed a bit unprofessional (it was still early on in the day too). We ordered a few more teas and even gave a tip hoping it may boost some customer service mural (mind you this was after waiting another 5 minutes at the register in hopes he would come out of the kitchen, we ended up having to call out for help to grab his attention to bring him out to the open). Later, we ended up using the left over honey that was available to sweeten our new drinks. Once the honey was done (which there wasn't much to begin with) my friend went up and told him that it was empty as well and he said, "Thanks," and took the honey away behind the counter and left it there. As much as I'd like to blame it on another off day, I've gone through the reviews and it would seem this isn't the first time this has happened with customers :/ read more

Zhi Tea is just "my [perfect] cup of tea." I vividly remember coming here for the fist time last year as I was finishing my last semester of college and wondering why I had waited so long to find such a place. Zhi Tea is one of the most charming and serene establishments that I have found in Austin to date. Everything from their wind chimes, to their wooden swings and picnic tables just seems like it could be a pop up from a fairytale short-story. Coming from a family of Kenyans who are heavy (and very, very, particular) tea drinkers, I can say that this place does a phenomenal job with their tea selection and leaves no stone unturned. I personally love the Turkish Spice Mint and the Sweet Texas Dreams. At Zhi Tea, you can find teas from all corners of the globe and when they bring out your tea, they present it beautifully with vintage looking tea pots on a tray alongside colorful hourglasses that let you know when your tea is done steeping. If you're in Austin go explore the wonderful world that is Zhi Tea - I promise it will not be a disappointment! 10/10 would highly recommend this place to others. read more

I love tea, but I don't know much about it. I know what I like; I know what I don't like. I went for a "Steep and Stitch" and was schooled a bit in teaology. The shop is small, but very cute and Candice patiently answered my many questions. You can walk around and sniff the various types, which are separated by colors (white, green, black, red). I bought two varieties--Cocoa Chai and Restful Blend. I've only tried the latter so far, but it definitely did help me sleep the night I had it. You can re-steep the leaves--they're that good! It's an Austin place, so who doesn't love that?! I think they do tea tastings as well, so you can figure out your favorites. It's a little tough to find, but definitely worth it. read more

My favorite thing about Zhi is that stumbling across it is a bit like finding a $10 bill in your jeans pocket when you haven't worn them in awhile. You're all delighted and "Oh! I didn't know that was there!" I drove past this spot when I moved into my new neighborhood, and decided to take my sister here when she came into town to visit. The space is very zen - concrete floors, modern furniture with clean lines, cool tones on the wall, and spa grooves playing on the radio. We went during the day, so it was very peaceful and quiet - not the type of place to go if you want to have a rowdy convo with a friend and not disturb others. We were well attended to by Jessica. We each had a pot of tea, mine being the Sweet Dessert Delight, which tasted to me like warm oatmeal after you've sugared and milked and cinnamoned it into bliss. There are a few small plates and bites to eat, but it's definitely more of a tea room and less of a lunch spot. I'm excited about this place, it's definitely my new go-to in the neighborhood for tea, and I'm excited to try the back porch once it warms up a bit. read more

There were the three kings, each bearing a gift. I have the one boyfriend, who recently appeared with three gifts, all in the spice category - the strong, brewable type. As long as there are three total gifts, I reckon baby Jesus and I can agree to be happy. Specimen 1: coconut lime. Mild and delicate, this was a yummy follow-up sip to my shrimp curry dish. 3.5 stars. Specimen 2: ginger & lime green rooibos. Herein lies the ying and the yang of my tea-riddled upbringing. Where my dad taught me to peel and cut off slices of fresh ginger for delicious tea, he also was the purchaser of - God help me - Celestial Seasoning's Lemon Zinger. Disgusting. Anything lemony and warm brings me to tears. Zhi Tea didn't fare much better. The tea was just... warm watery lemon flavored ick. And having fresh ginger in my fridge, my palate barely detected the hints of ginger in this stash. 2 stars is being generous. Specimen 3: our favorite, the Kenya Chai. Definitely more along the lines of what we have in mind as far as spices go*, and far more robust than the other two teas. Add a splash of half'n'half and honey, and this guy is good to go. The only con: it takes a crapton more tea herbs to make this stuff, meaning one of these bags doesn't get you as far as most other teas. 4 stars. The packaging is pretty fabulous. Detailed brewing instructions with water temperatures, measurements and times. And it's pretty and see-through, so you can see the herbs before you buy. My kind of set up. High-five, Jesus. [*Bear in mind: this tea fanatic is head over heels for the hot cinnamon (see Tea Embassy). It's a super strong, soothing brew that barely requires honey. Tough competition.] read more
