Updated review- 10 years on, still our favorite sushi place! We even had a small reception/ lunch here following our wedding ceremony, it's really our favorite! I've never had anything bad here. They have plenty of non- sushi options, so you can bring a group including people who don't do sushi. The magic salmon roll has always been my favorite and i like trying the special rolls they feature too. They have a lunch menu and do plenty of take out- really a great choice for ordering takeout ahead. This is a family-owned business and you will often see the whole family there- I feel like I've watched their daughters grow up through the years of getting my sushi fix! I was craving sushi the other night, and my kids were wanting to try sashimi, so I swung by here on my way home. The price was reasonable, the food tasted great, was made quickly and the atmosphere was comfortable. One of the best parts was knowing that the sashimi was for my kids to try, the hostess made a pair of "training" chopsticks for them to try to use. It was a very kind gesture and my kids loved it. Loved our bento boxes for lunch! It was very quiet inside, with only a few other diners in site. They had a very large, stocked bar though we did not partake on this visit. We were sat quickly and the service was swift and efficient, including answering our questions as it was our first time here. Really good sushi, but subpar to average atmosphere. We first arrived and a very young girl (like 5-6 years old) was our hostess and took us to our booth. Once seated, we had a quiet and rather awkward waitress, as she would take our order/speak to us and walk away without saying anything in response throughout the meal. She also didn't give us napkins and took away chopsticks before other food was on its way, so we had to ask for more. The sushi was excellent and tasted fresh and was delicate. The environment was somewhat on the quieter side, but not that quiet. There was nice decorations on the wall, but there was a VERY obnoxious doorbell that would go off every time someone entered the restaurant. Since it was somewhat quiet, the doorbell could be heard EVERY time. The restaurant attire was casual, but nice clothing, however, some patron was wearing a tank top (in February). The good: coming back here excites me. We like trying new stuff from their appetizers menu, and we enjoy their sushi. Last time we went for their special sushi roll, the roll was topped with diced mangos, and as a whole it was light and delicious. I cant remember the last time i had a roll this light to my mouth. We're always happy with their service and how quick food comes out to our table. Very nice atmosphere with spacious dining area. This place is slowly making its way to my top ten sushi list. The bad: most their sushi proteins are imitations. This isnt necessarily a bad thing, and I will still come back for more. If fresh taste is your lane, you might not enjoy this as much as I did. My hibachi chicken arrived undercooked. It was very obvious. I shared my concerns with the waitress (the owner?) that it didn't seem cooked enough, but she dismissed it outright and said "We always make sure that the chicken is cooked." Ziki's is back to its pre-Covid form: great sushi at great prices. We enjoyed gyoza, edamame, a bowl of miso soup, and 4 different rolls for $43. Everything tasted super and the staff is being super careful to stay masked and keep their patrons healthy. We've had takeout from Ziki in the past two weeks also, and the food was delicious at home--plus they have a super protocol for alerting people when their takeout order is ready, by posting the receipt in the window...until yours comes up, stay in your vehicle for safety, then pop in, pay and go. 2/14/21 My partner and I picked sushi to be our main food for Valentine's Day! We had only really tried a couple places in the area and found Ziki on Yelp. We placed an order and was nervous because again, we never had it. We were able to order online and view the menu. Which was convenient for us when deciding what we wanted. They had plenty of options. And the price is not as expensive as some other restaurants in the area which was nice for us. We love our sushi so when we got home and opened the containers realized how much food we ordered! Huge portion sizes! Haha so many pieces! It was so good! It was so fresh! Coming from an area on the East Coast where sushi places are prevelant, we've been on the hunt for some delicious sushi in either MI or IN! Ziki was pretty good. We didn't like that when we arrived there was a vacuum out on the far side of the restaurant- it may sound silly, but I want to see that the place is *already* clean, I don't think cleaning supplies should be out while customers are eating. The seaweed salad wasn't my favorite, it had an odd flavor that didn't sit well. Crab rangoon was mostly cream cheese- very basic. My husband felt like his food was "ok"- but he's had better teriyaki. The sushi was good- not great, but it hit the spot. The staff was attentive & friendly. Overall, we may try them again if we happen to be in the area but I don't know that we would take the 45 minute trip for it again! read more

It's sad for me to write this review because we have had so many lunches and meals here and never had an issue. Went in here for a quick lunch a month ago. The server brought out our wrong food. We wanted tempura and she put it in as teriyaki. I mean, I don't know how it could happen. Perhaps, the language barrier but we were out of time so we didn't wanna send it back. March 23, 2021 update: Ziki opens for in-person dining again starting today. Hurray! This is a great place to celebrate a birthday (although keep in mind at present there are table-size restrictions in place in MI so a large group might have to sit in separate tables) because they turn down the lights, throw some disco lights on, crank the music and really make a spectacle of celebrating the honoree. Last I knew, they also offered a discount on your meal on your actual birthday, but who knows if that's still in effect during the chaos that is dining in 2020/2021! I ordered my first avocado bomb here (a textural triumph combining the silky gooeyness of a perfectly ripe avocado with the slick crunch of tiny little tobiko roe. If you ever see it on the specialty board, absolutely order it! They do a fabulous job here with specialty rolls as well (godzilla is my favorite and again pairs the gooey avocado goodness with contrasting crunch from the deep frying). The lunch specials are legit and I always mean to try some of their ramen and other noodle dishes since the photos looks so tantalizing, but then when I get there I always just have to get that great sushi! Service is generally pretty attentive, the bathrooms are always spotless, and parking is aplenty here. If you get rice bloat from too many rolls, there's also Bicentennial Trail a block or so away to burn of those yummy calories. read more

I was looking for a dinner place near Water Street in Portage and found Ziki on Yelp. I'm so glad I did, because after reading a bunch of rave reviews and looking at all the photos, I couldn't wait to check it out. Located in a strip mall by a fitness place, it's kind of tucked away and the logo makes the sign a little hard to read, but there's plenty of parking and when we arrived at 5:30 pm on a weekday it was pretty quiet with plenty of seats to choose from. As others have mentioned, the decor is a little disjointed with Asian themed decorations as well as flashing multicolored lights over the sushi bar. I didn't really mind because I was so excited for sushi! Plus the place was very clean and the seating was comfortable. Your meal starts with tortilla chips and dipping sauce that tasted like plum sauce or something you'd get with spring rolls. Kind of weird, as I've never seen that before, but I wasn't mad about it. Sure, maybe it's not "authentic," but I'm not taking away any stars for it! Our server took our order right away and I already knew what I wanted after reading the menu 100 times and looking at photos online. I ordered the Portage, Sapporo, and Sweetheart rolls to split with my boyfriend. Our friend got the Magic Salmon and eel & avocado roll. The rolls came out quickly enough and the plates were definitely decorated...a lot. Maybe even to the point of being a little ridiculous, with a big glassblown snail on my plate and a plastic light up flamingo on our friend's plate. Again, kind of unusual, but I'm not going to get angry about it. It would be one thing if they were just doing it as a gimmick to distract from less than quality food, but that is certainly not the case here. The rolls were wonderful! I am a huge sushi fan and try sushi anywhere I can, and am probably a good candidate for mercury poisoning with all the sushi I've eaten in my life. All joking aside, I definitely consider myself a sushi connoisseur and I'm happy to say this was good sushi! (I do eat plenty of sashimi and plain sushi, not just specialty rolls.) It's not the best sushi I've ever had in my life, but good quality for the price and beautifully presented. The Portage was my favorite. I thought the coconut flakes would be weird but it was actually delicious. It's rolled with a bunch of different kind of fish on it like a rainbow roll but with much more flavor due to the great sauces. The Sweetheart roll is a classic we're used to getting at Fujiyama and other places in Grand Rapids. This version has a lot of cream cheese so haters beware! Finally, the Sapporo roll was good but I was hoping for more spice. The flavors of this roll were delicate and light and I love the soy wrap. I would definitely go back again and I highly recommend ZIki to any sushi lover in Kalamazoo! read more

It is refreshing to go to a Japanese restraunt and leave truly satisfied. Perhaps it was a biased experience because of the company we had but I would recommend this restraunt still in spite of that. TL:DR Food was tasty, well portioned, well presented, and of quality ingredients. Well maintained ambience and friendly, attentive staff. Of all the food, their rolls were probably the best, followed by their gyoza, then their raw fish, and lastly their bento boxes. The sashimi could have been more, but they were good cuts, and was plenty for the price, especially given the location. The rolls were all well sauced and didn't lack for flavor. They could have had more eel in their eel roll, but it was enough to taste good and wasn't overwhelmed by the other ingredients. The amazing tuna roll was particularly good as was the lobster roll. The bento boxes were well portioned and the soup and salad that came before were not of subpar standard, which is what you normally get. Only complaint would be that there was not enough steak and they brought the wrong shrimp order, but what we got was still good and grandma has not complaints. Lastly, the ambience and staff were both professional. Everything was clean, and didn't look worn. Staff was attentive and took empty dishes away quickly, asked if we needed anything, filled our tea, and even took our picture at the end. I can't imagine a trip to Portage without stopping here. The food is not only excellent, it's just beautiful. Pure art. They really know their stuff. The owners are on site and work hard to provide a stellar dining experience. Whether you're having just a small bite or a feast, you'll leave here happy. I've never been disappointed. When celebrating a birthday they provide a really cool disco laser light show complete with the happy birthday song. It's silly and festive and incredibly fun! I am very patient and understanding when it comes to restaurants working under the constraints of the pandemic. My order consisted of gyozas and seafood soup as appetizers both were served cold. No problem, we understand maybe it got cold waiting for the waitress to serve it to us. Unfortunately our main entrees were served lukewarm too. Honestly the rice was served above lukewarm but lacked flavor. The pork Katsu was hard and cold. Looked as if they served me a dish a customer sent back. When I notified the waitress, she was trying to convince me it was served fresh out the grease. Needless to say I still left a tip, but will not dine there again. Where do I even start with my FAVORITE sushi place around? I am always a little tiny bit skeptical when I see a sushi place pop up in the local strip mall, next to the gym, but let me tell you...this place ROCKS! I have traveled and eaten at many a sushi bar, but nothing in the area even comes close to Ziki. For lunch I belly up to the table to indulge in 3 rolls and 4 pieces of my favorite (tuna, salmon or eel) usually, for about $16. The chef is a bit of an artist as he swipes a floral or a dragon design on the place in spicy mayo and sriracha and might even add some colorful LED lighting under a martini glass for full effect. For dinner, the presentation is even better, with a little vegetable garnish, an edible flower and maybe a bit of dry ice for that special occasion with your sweetie. Don't forget that on your birthday you get your meal at 50% off and a free dessert too...what more could you ask for? My wife and I even got out for a little one-on-one time for our anniversary and they gave us a nice dessert on the house.
