I'm excited to have this restaurant in Louisville. Before Covid, there were many excellent buffets where you could get a variety of tastes. This is how I learned about Indian dishes and spices. Now, for instance, you can get an order of Chana Masala at nearby Tikki House for $ 15.99 plus tax. One dish. The beauty of Zila is that you can get well priced nanoos from 6-9 dollars plus butter naan for 2.99. Rolls (Kathi) are 9-10 dollars. For me, that's two meals and variety. After two visits, I am only more excited about returning and trying more. The Chana Marsala Nanoo was so flavorful. The soft, smoky thick Naan was a perfect size. I also loved the Paneer Makhani with the melt in your mouth paneer.Quite filling. Spice level was good. I realize that this is a challenge for Indian and Thai restaurants, Americans often fear ordering something that is too spicy. However, the food here is loaded with flavor, not too much spice. I had a cucumber salad side which was a little too heavy on onions for my taste. It's the only item I didn't care for. They have a chickpea salad available as well. It's a wonderful place to get a healthy vegetarian meal. All the ingredients are fresh and bread is superb. I opted for carry out, but there is a nice outside area in a courtyard for diners. There are a few tables indoors as well. The lassis look enticing in the large bubbling dispensers. I'm saving that for next time. I found this to be OK, but very low on the ladder of Louisville Indian restaurants. I ordered my benchmarks: Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer. Both were served room temperature. The CTM sauce was good. The chicken was 100% dark meat, great if that's your jam, but I don't care for it. If the dish was hot and had white meat it would be a winner. The SP was extremely runny. I got a side of rice to help it out. It did not come with the meal. My dinner mate fought it with the supplied naan. The taste was very earthy, and average at best. Both were served on top of a single piece of plain naan. I would rather dip with clean hands. I don't get that one. I enjoyed a nice cup of masala tea, which was self serve refillable. A+ there. The bill plus 15% tip was 80 bucks. I don't see myself going back. There are much better options. read more

More like Indian fusion! My friends ordered a few things to share: masala fries, cucumber salad and tandoori wings. Delicious! The cucumber salad was perfect to add on top of the naano. We all got naanos. Kind of like a wrap but with naan. They're harder to eat without utensils. Very generous on the portion sizes and the meat! I got curry chicken which was delicious. The food is definitely less salted and the garlic naan isn't super garlicky. But not a bad thing. This is a great restaurant if you're new to Indian cuisine. We also shared the kebab delight naan wrap and gulab jamun. Super good! Love that the gulab jamun wasn't too sweet. One of the guys who knows the owner told us to try the rasmali dessert next time. Is fast casual Indian a good idea? Short answer: yes. Zila Indian Kitchen is a delightful example of such a thing, offering quick and delicious options for St. Matthews diners. After confirming they cater to plant based eaters, we visited Zila on a Friday evening. Since it was our first visit we opted to dine-in to experience Zila from beginning to delicious last bite. The staff is welcoming and clearly very proud of their food - the person taking our order gave fabulous recommendations and offered suggestions for how to customize several items to ensure they were entirely vegan. Our food arrived within 10 minutes of placing the order, and was SO GOOD. *Masala fries - get these. Crispy, perfectly fried potato wedges doused with magical spice. They substituted tamarind chutney for the standard non-vegan dipping sauce, and it was the perfect addition. *Kachumber salad - beautifully dressed lettuce, cucumber, tomato, purple onions, pairs nicely with the heavier, complex curries. *Chana masala - very good, savory chickpeas with a bit of tang. *Yellow dal - the star of the show, warm, filling, perfectly spiced - comfort food at its best. *Basmati rice - fluffy, tasty, just yes. Pricing is reasonable for the quality and quantity, and there was plenty of seating when we arrived (slightly less as we were leaving, hinting to the popularity). Back again! Proper solid scran overall! Think I finally solved the mystery of the under-salted biryani though! the missing salt definitely ended up in the lamb rogan josh! Meanwhile the Delhi butter chicken arrived sweet enough that some uncle in Delhi would probably ask if dessert came early! Still smashed the lot though. Mango lassi was sweeter than average too, but creamy and dangerously drinkable. Also thought the 4oz basmati rice looked a bit stingy at first, but honestly it probably saved me from absolutely demolishing both curries, except it clearly didn't, because I proudly inhaled both! Insider info from America: people here absolutely love tikka masala, number one comfort order. Spare a bit of that butter chicken sugar and chuck it into the masala instead! Fast, casual Indian food with an American twist. Perfect location right in St Matthews next to Coal's. Lots of outdoor seating. Indoor is super cute. They have tons of neat artwork from local artists. Staff is friendly and super helpful. You order at the front counter and they bring it out to you. Manager was going by tables checking on everyone. Their concept, Naanos, are like Indian naan tacos. Super unique! They also have naan with cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning--it's great! Decided to try Zila with a friend of mine and really enjoyed the food. The restaurant is very colorful and inviting. No table service, you just walk right up to the counter put in your order and find a seat. It's quick and easy. I ordered the lamb seekh naano to eat there, and the salmon kebab with dal for to go. I really enjoyed both. The lamb seekh naano was like a taco. You get to pick your bread so I chose garlic naan but my friend chose the everything bagel and I was jealous because it had cheese in the middle. I will warn you that the lamb definitely had spice, as well as the dahl. To me, it was the perfect amount, but I like spicy. read more

Zila Indian Kitchen is a New modern Indian casual dining restaurant in St. Matthew's. Plenty of parking within the shopping center. Walk in and order at the counter. Alex was very friendly and helpful when ordering. Had the butter chicken entree with naan bread and it was so flavorful. Also tried the crispy fries and they were awesome. Butter chicken had 4 small pieces of chicken and the rest was soup. 4. Given the watery nature and portion size, I left unsatisfied. For $16 plus tax with no naan, it's just not worth it. I guess these are St Matthew's prices. They really need to adjust a few things before I'd consider returning. read more

I really, really hate doing this because I know they are a new restaurant, but I feel obligated to because of the experience. My wife and I love ourselves some good Indian food. Chicken tikka, chicken curry, garlic naan, vegetable samosa - you name it. We decided to try Zila as we saw it was new and had some solid reviews. We were pretty disappointed with the results. I ordered takeout and got there 5 minutes after the food was ready. It's about a 12 minute drive home but food was quite cold after getting home. Not a massive deal there. Flavor was.... Different. We both did not really enjoy our dishes. Also my wife has a bad egg allergy and we were not told about the naan having egg, nor is it posted anywhere. Needless to say she ended up very upset and very sick after eating some and immediately having a reaction. Likely will not be back here anytime soon. read more

Nice unique concept for the area. Portions and prices are both great! Menu is easy to follow without being overwhelming. We had the naanos (saag paneer, paneer makhani, paneer tikka) and a naan kebab delight. All were excellent. The spice level is accessible for those unaccustomed to Indian food. During my next visit I'll have to ask if more heat is available when requested. The only thing missing from the menu I'd like to see is chili paneer!
