When I was young this place was located up the interstate a bit in Kenosha County. I hadn't visited…read moresince 1992 so we stopped in recently on a Wisconsin apple picking trip. The newer location is much larger than the old one and has more indoor space in what looks like a repurposed truck repair facility. The buildings are well maintained and there's a large gift shop with some old surplus bits and pieces for sale along with t-shirts, flags, posters and so on. The proprietor was friendly and explained where to follow the path through the indoor portion to the larger outdoor equipment. The indoor collection is much larger than the old location had. They have multiple historic vehicles, uniformed dummies, cases with supplies and equipment, framed medal collections and usually signs to explain what you're seeing. The outdoor collection is really cool. Here you'll find, in addition to the expected collection of Peacekeeper armored cars and old tanks, unusual stuff like a Mil-24 Hind gunship which I always thought was the coolest looking helicopter ever. They also have some trainer jets, an F-15, a Reaper drone, other helicopters and vehicles. Some of the jets have airline stair trucks parked alongside so you can walk up and see into the interior. They do events with their vehicles where you can ride in them on the property and others where they squash junk cars with tanks. Exit through the gift shop. Their T-shirts are priced pretty fairly. A fun place for history buffs, families with kids and anyone else interested in this kind of thing. By the way, it's located in Russell. The western border of Zion is like 2 miles east of them. We started a family, we'd bring everyone we knew and loved. It has always been a special tradition for us. We would spend a lot of money. Get the friends of faire passes. Buy food, swords, play games, support the artists and vendors and performers, Etc. Until the prices hikes. The last 2-4 years, we only started going once a year. And what's wild, we were making more money? So how is it that we were having to spend less because of how expensive faire became? We were no longer spending extra because pricing on everything was so expensive. And not just a little expensive... the price jumps have become outlandish. It would be different if there were significant improvements or changes to the grounds, additional bathrooms, better water access or if the workers were getting paid more or new shows were being added. But none of these things have happened from what I've seen or heard. Even some of our favorite vendors left and haven't returned. I'm not sure if my family will be attending BRF this year or any year going forward. And that makes me so incredibly sad. It's always been such a big part of our lives. We started as teenagers that helped in the sand pits during gladiator battles before the joust, to being in our 30s introducing it to our babies, thinking we'd keep going to faire even after we were old and grey. Now faire feels overly commercialized and like the only thing worth caring about is money. I know how popular faire got. Especially after becoming viral on social media. So I understand the need to hike prices a little to compensate for supplies for the amount of people attending, inflation, etc. But what is happening is price gouging, and it's unbelievable. This is not the faire we've always known and loved. If things change we may come back. But until then we will be looking into other alternatives... please do better Bristol. I drove in to drop off my mail and when I went to check in on Yelp the location didn't even exist. Now I know why no one was here because if its not on Yelp, then it doesn't exist. So look out US Postal workers because you've been listed and the Yelpers are coming. We're also gonna ask you to weigh packages. Ha! This place was completely empty. I can't stand going to Chicago post offices anymore because it usually takes 45 minutes to get in and out. So it would be worth it for me to drive here and back to Chicago in order to mail my packages. I found it funny that it closes at 4:30pm on Mon to Fri but my mail is picked up at 5pm inside. Is there a party going on for that half hour? How do I get in to the locked building to drop off my mail, after 4:30? Why wouldn't they just list mail pick up at 4:30pm? Based on Kelli's tour about Marshall Field's and its role in the movie industry, I recently watched "Mahogany" for the first time. And her tour which focused on the LaGrange locations in "While You Were Sleeping" led me to finally check out this movie, as well.
