An island of safe vegetarian food around the meat culture surrounding it. We've only been to the small Zodiac - note that the large one opens at 6pm, or at least that's how it was today (Friday). Nevertheless, the pizza served was great and we had a great time. They were also very patient with us playing a board game on one of their tables, but note that if you plan on doing that then the small zodiac barely fits a decent board. Very recommended for vegetarians! read more

Super fresh vegan food, took some hardcore meat eaters that were super surprised how tasty vegan food can be. Not easy to park, cozy place inside. read more

this wonderful unique restaurant is definitely my favorite in germany & possibly in all europe - no kidding. it features organic vegetarian fare as well as organic wine, beer, cider & other beverages. i myself am not vegetarian, so this is not the criterion for my rating, but after all the schweinfleisch-heavy menus you find in germany, what a relief it is to discover zodiac . the food is as fresh & made-to-order as you can find & is not only delicious, but food that makes you feel better as soon as you begin eating it. the super-welcoming proprietor mo is of iranian origin ( i'm pretty sure the staff is comprised of mo's large family), so the cuisine is probably persian at its core, but cannot be defined exclusivlely as such. i've had 5 meals at zodiac, & everything i've tried there is good. yesterday i had the delicious ratatouille made with roast vegetables, the freshest tastiest taboulleh you can imagine (always order the taboulleh) & a pizza with feta, spinach & olive, all of which a friend & i shared along with a cider & a weitzenbier & the bill was 36e, so as you see the price is surprisingly reasonable. i'll also recommend any of the soups, by the way. always call & reserve first, as you never know when the place will be swarming with neighborhood patrons - it is certainly popular. the ambience is calming, with low lighting & lots of green vines climbing everywhere. the service is very good, but the food being individually prepared comes out in its own time. once you're seated, you won't be rushed in any way. the kitchen is in full view of the dining room & you won't hear food processors whirring (i'm pretty sure they don't use them) or even loud conversation. & if you're not able to be seated that night, you can order a pizza from the adjacent take-out window. i tour professionally, & whenever i hit essen zodiac is the first place i go. i'll be here a total of 6 days this trip, & i'll definitely dine at zodiac at least one more time. thank you mo & crew & i'll definitely be seeing you soon! read more

When trying to leave, we had to pay at the counter because our repeated orders for the check stayed unanswered. I kinda expect places like this in the suburbs - not in the hip parts of a major city. Maybe they just had a bad day.

The food is very good and portions are not small. Selection is very good including all the classics from Italy. Daily and seasonal recommendations can be found as well. The thin crusted pizza is worth a try as well as all different pasta dishes. The spaghetti are cooked perfectly al dente. Meat dishes include beef, lamb and pork. If you have room go for the classic desserts. Prices are reasonable and they have an excellent set lunch which is really good value for money.

Their pizza is delicious, salads great - and I just had the lasagna - oh man! It's just how it should be, the right amount of cheese and sauce and noodles and hot and tasty - throw in some tasty pizza bread balls and it's perfect! And the service is wunderbar too - a cute and kind (and english speaking) woman always takes great care of everyone. It's great food for a good price served by nice people, go try it!

Trotz meiner Skepsis hat mich eine vegane Bekannte hierher zum Essen eingeladen und schon der erste Bissen hat mich überzeugt! Vegetarisch oder sogar vegan Pizza essen ist hier möglich, das ganze auch noch mit Vollkornteig und Bio-Zutaten. Absolut empfehlenswert, wenn man mal eine Alternative zur Fett-triefenden fast-food-Pizza vom Billig-Anbieter sucht. Nicht ganz billig (große Pizza mit mehreren Belägen um 8,-EUR), aber jeden Cent davon Wert! Über die Pizza hinaus diverse vegetarische (vollwertige) Speisen im Angebot; der Beweis, dass "Bio" oder "Vollwert" NICHT laff oder einfach "bäh" schmeckt! Tip für Experimentierfreudige: einfach mal die "Bio-Cola" bestellen, in keiner Weise was ich erwartet hab aber sehr geschmackvoll! read more

Ein wunderschönes, gemütliches Restaurant mit wahnsinng herzlichen Menschen, toller Philosphie und leckerem vielseitigen Essen ein Ort, an dem man auftanken kann! Wir waren heute das erste mal da und waren total begeistert! Da wir nicht genug Geld mithatten und man nicht mit Karte zahlen kann, wurden uns sogar 10 Euro erlassen, obwohl wir sogar noch Geld holen gehen wollten. Man merkt sofort, dass es keine dieser anonymen Ketten ist, sondern ein Restaurant, in dem es allen wirklich am Herzen liegt, dass man sich wohl fühlt. Die etwas andere Pizzeria in Essen. Jede Pizza ist eine Sache für sich. Sehr viele eigene Zutaten auf deren Pizzen ergeben einen ganz speziellen Geschmack. Die Zuaten sind stets frisch und soweit ich weiß wird auch der Teig selbst zubereitet! Alles zu 100% vegetarisch oder vegan! Einzigartig in Essen. Die Preise können vielleicht ein bißchen abschrecken, gehen aber aufgrund des Geschmacks und der frischen Zutaten absolut in Ordnung. Unbedingt ausprobieren! Gruße, Artie read more

My husband and I tried Zodiac last night for the first time. Honestly, The Pizza exceeded my expectations. It was the best Vegan Pizza I ever ate. We sat in the small bakery they have next to the actual restaurant since we were short on time. The place was so cozy with a warm atmosphere and perfect for a date night! The service was impeccable and quite fast and the staff was very welcoming. Great value for price! I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Das beste Lokal überhaupt! Alles Bio, und keine Spur von Fertig- Gerichten! Bei uns war immer alles frisch zubereitet. Wie sonst sollte es gehen, daß die Gerichte sowohl vegan als auch vegetarisch zu bestellen sind?! Sehr freundliches Personal. Die Vollkorn Pizza ist unglaublich lecker. Nicht zu vergleichen mit einer klassisch italienischen, aber das macht sie auch so besonders. Außerdem ist die Atmosphäre sehr gemütlich und der Service super freundlich. read more

Most of the menu is some combination of vegetables and fake meat in sauce on top of rice or noodles. I find these dishes to be a little too greasy and heavy, and I usually feel a little off for a few hours if I eat them. I suspect that, if I were a vegetarian, I would crave this kind of heavy food. On the other hand, if I order soup and some of the lighter dishes, I really enjoy Jade. The quality of my experience really depends on what I order.
