I decided to stop by after reading exceptional Yelp reviews and I'm glad I did. I was immediately stumped by the menu because of all the equally appealing and unique popsicle flavors. You can find classic flavors such as cookies and cream or special flavors such as pineapple mango ginger. They also split the menu into dairy and non-dairy bars, which I would imagine being good for those who are lactose-intolerant. I also saw a couple ice cream sandwiches on the menu, one being red velvet, that I wanted to try. I was stuck between the passion fruit/strawberry popsicle and the avocado one, but ultimately chose the avocado one. When I first received it, it was extremely cold and was difficult to taste and bite into. I would imagine that on a hot summer's day, this would be beneficial because it wouldn't melt quickly. Once it defrosted a little, I was immediately surprised and delighted to taste its true avocado flavor, which was evident with the visible chunks of avocado. I am a Zora Dora addict. It's confirmed. I went here twice over the weekend. They were nearly sold out of every flavor each time, as we got there late in the day. If you want your pick of every flavor, I suggest showing up early. Even the "left over" flavors that weren't quite as popular were still AMAZINGLY delicious. On Saturday, I tried the Coconut Lime pop and my boyfriend had the Pineapple Chili. We made sweet, sweet love to those pops and agreed that we'd have to return on Sunday. When we did, we only had 3 flavors to choose from - so I tried the Arroz Con Leche and my guy had the Banana Coconut Curry Peanut. These flavor combos might sound a little strange, but just trust me - your mouth will thank you for it. I am a big fan of rice pudding, and the Arroz Con Leche ice pop was essentially frozen rice pudding. It's (obviously) cream-based, but wasn't heavy at all and didn't give me the queasy feeling I often get when eating ice cream in hot weather. There were frozen bits of rice and raisins and I'm pretty sure the way I devoured that thing may have looked perverse to old people. Whatev. I can't wait to go back and try more flavors... The best-kept secret in the Hudson Valley as far as ice cream is concerned. Zora Dora makes small-batch popsicles using local ingredients; about half are ice cream pops and half are dairy free. The Muddy Hudson Coffee and Mint Chocolate Chip are my favorites, and my family is obsessed with the Mount Beacon, but the straight-up fruit popsicles can't be beat on a hot day. I'd consider moving to Beacon to be closer to Zora Dora. I'm not kidding... We love these popsicles so much that we had them in lieu of favors at our wedding. Who really uses that crap anyway, popsicles are where it's at! Not only were they a HUGE hit with our guests, working with Steve was a dream. I was a bit of a procrastinating bride and called him a mere week before the wedding to see if he could pull it off for us. No problem, he offered to make whatever we wanted. When our venue informed us they wouldn't have any freezer room for them, Steve gave us a huge cooler to store them in. Finally, when I had to pick them up at 10am before the shop even opened, he opened early just for us. He never made us feel like we were bothering or burdening him. You don't find that sort of hospitality just anywhere. Even besides the awesomeness of the owner, the popsicles are SO good. All summer I've been making excuses to go to Beacon just so we can pop into ZD, and believe me, it's not a quick drive for us. After the guy at Poppy's told us Zora's was probably closed we took our chances and got lucky! The owner Steve saw us peering into the closed store front with our sad faces pressed up against the glass and opened the door for us! When we explained that we came all the way from NYC for Zora's Steve (and Zora the dog) welcomed us in for some leftovers from the season. Turns out Steve and I grew up in the same part of NYC which made the experience even better... we actually chatted so long that we missed Dia: Beacon (closes at 4pm) but the enjoyable Zora experience was worth it. The pops were smooth and creamy. The maple walnut was great as well as a chocolate flavor that we had. The store was very cute and homey.
