A very friendly gentleman served us, and was very understanding of our not speaking German. Fetched us menus and was patient with our questions. What attracted us to the restaurant was the veggie schnitzel (we're both vegetarians) and traditional Frankfurter fare on the menu. Everything was perfect. From the recommended apfelwein (not as strong as I expected) to the veggie schnitzel and roasted potatoes. The frankfurt green sauce was very tasty. For dessert I had the apfelwein panacotta (which was good) and my wife had the warm chocolate cake (which was great -- like a molten german cake). We would recommend this restaurant heartily, especially for any vegetarians hoping to get try more traditional German fare without the meat (which is tough to do!).
I ordered the Frankfurter Schnitzel with green sauce & fried potatoes. The green sauce was a disappointment. For having seven herbs it in, I didn't think it was flavorful. To be fair, it was my first time trying it, so I'm not sure if it's suppose to taste that way or if Zum Eichkatzerl's wasn't good. Be sure to specify the size (large or small) when ordering escalopes. I intended to get the small; waiter didn't ask and gave me the large which was 4 EUR more and ended up wasting half since I couldn't finish it. The breading completely crumbled when I cut into it. I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, this was my least favorite meal in Frankfurt.
Found in the Sachsenhausen area of Frankfurt, not far from the river, Zum Eichkatzerl has achieved modest acclaim as an Apfelweinbar, but as dinner on Sunday proved the kitchen is quite capable of turning out good versions of classic Hessen Cuisine at fair prices. Open for dinner nightly, weekends beginning at 16h00 and the rest an hour later, it is once past an interior garden that guests find a heavily wooded interior decorated by squirrels and communal tables, just one elderly gentleman who "comes almost every day" inside, chatting quietly with the bartender. Bilingual to an extent, though just two servers in addition to the bar man serving at least seventy guests did not allow much time to chat, it was from a menu provided in English that decisions were made, a €2 glass of house Apfelwein sweet with a bit of minerality that was refreshing in a room with temperatures hovering around 26 °C. Popular with locals, a table of lager-heads next to another full of Asians enjoying Pork Knuckle, it was after being informed that the kitchen was "out" of Spatzle that Appetizers arrived, the cleverly-named "Sachsenhauser Tapas" offering six selections including Pork Sausage and boiled Rib plus Homemade Cheese Cream, Green Sauce and Hard Cheese marinated with Onions that went particularly well with slices of Brown Bread. Opting for Butter-fried Fried Potatoes as an alternative to Noodles, these and a Salad topped in Corn serviceable but not noteworthy, it was nearly an hour after sitting down that a "small" order of Pork Schnitzel arrived slightly overcooked, browned edges a bit tough though the center was good both on its own and with a squeeze of Lemon. Not offering Apple Strudel or any other German specialties as Dessert, the "fresh baked" Chocolate Cake thus decided upon to finish, it was after fifteen minutes that a round of Lava Cake was delivered, a molten center admittedly unexpected based on menu verbiage but both texture and flavor good, as was the thick Crème Anglaise.
The Squirrel is another charming courtyard venue in Sachsenhausen, in which to enjoy some Apfelwein. More than Apfelwein in the end as a hen night turned up and for some reason (best understood by locals I guess) the soon to be bride had to sell us some Rheinspritzer shots, in Waldmeister and Raspberry flavours. Preferred the Apfelwein but it made for an entertaining distraction. (See photo below)
Fantastic applewein bar. Located in Sachsenhausen, just off of the river, the place has a garden and tables inside. We came on a Friday night and were promptly seated at a shared table with some friendly folks. We promptly ordered two appleweins. They have English food menus so we ordered a grilled pork knuckle and a pork schnitzel with green sauce. Note the portions are huge so come hungry. The waiters are friendly and are typically running around from table to table so you'll need to flag them down when you want to order. Since they were so busy, I'd reco to order everything all at once. The food was really good. The schnitzel was some of the best that I've had in Germany. And the environment was lively. Definitely a place to go if you're interested in trying some applewein
For my first visit to Germany, I was looking for a restaurant that would serve plant-based versions of famous Frankfurt/German cuisine, and luckily Zum Eichkatzerl was able to deliver for me. They opened at 16:00 and my group was ready to dine at one of their outdoor tables and get eating. Their menu has both German and English, and I was able to easily find what I was looking for: a vegan schnitzel with green sauce. My plate came out with some thinly fried vegan mock meat and their famous green sauce. The schnitzel also came with a side of potatoes to complete the dish. Your slowly pour over the herby sauce onto your dish and dig right in. I gotta give it props because it was delicious and a banger of a local cuisine to get to try. Our server was nice and checked in on us periodically until it got too crowded. Overall, a really nice place to try some vegan local food without worrying about it containing meat. read more

Food was amazing !! Ordered the Sachsenhauser Pfannchen and was not disappointed. Large portions at a locals price. Staff was super welcoming and attentive. I will be recommending that all my friends visit when visiting Frankfurt. - FYI it got fairly busy after 5pm and we were glad that we had made a reservation. read more
Traditional "Frankfurter Küche" with a good variety of dishes. A must is to get a Bembel which is a jug filled with Apple wine to share. I can recommend the Appetizer plate which gives you a great idea of a typical German evening meal! read more

Great courtyard, excellent beer and service. Sat outside on a cool crisp night and had a beer and chilled. It was warm inside and the bartenders were really helpful in navigating in English. Squirrel theme throughout which is strange and yet comical. read more

Off to Squirrel-Cat we go! Okay, so perhaps this is one of those times when direct translation of the name doesn't work so well... The squirrel part of the name makes sense enough, especially when sitting out in the summer garden during less arctic weather, watching the native tree-dwellers do their thing. But I've no idea where the cat part comes in. It does make for the occasional head-scratching, tongue-twisting, and brow-furrowing... ...That is, until you enter the place and the first beers and apple wines have been served, followed by hearty and generous plates of good, classic Frankfurt victuals plopped in front of you not too long after ordering. When the heart of the place speaks for itself, that's when it doesn't matter anymore whether you can pronounce the name. Pricing tends to reflect the slightly inflated tendencies in this dear Stadt, but nothing out of the norm. The quality of food is also good - again, nothing that will make your taste buds pop, but will certainly fill your belly in that way that good German fare often does. The more popular Apfelwein Kneipen do tend to serve a tad bit higher quality of dish, but what we consistently enjoy about this place is their more lax atmosphere and friendlier service. The top Frankfurt apple wine locales seem to be very aware of their popularity and reputations, and as such, they can sometimes feel like a tourist factory - get you in, fill 'er up, get you out (albeit, with good food indeed!). Eichkatzerl is the less popular cousin, where the whole beat of the place is just much more relaxed, and that tiny but noticeable bit calmer and quieter... which is simply superb for game nights! The long, open tables - both indoors and out - are perfect for the regular gathering of friends to play board games, rounds of poker, cards, and the other usual fun nonsense. The open seating also promotes conversations between various parties of people, always making for great nights, and sometimes the lines of whose beers were on whose tabs can be blurred. It's just one of those places with nice, positive karma, getting to meet even nicer people from all backgrounds. Haven't had a dull evening there yet! Extra kudos to the staff, who are fast and efficient as only German service can be, but without that typical edge and sometimes-bite that oft characterizes the whole Apfelwein culture. Here, we're allowed to laugh out loud, get silly, talk to rabbles of strangers, play our games, eat drink and be merry - all without getting barked at.
