The tables were turning over and even though both were very busy they handled everyone surprisingly well. Food and drinks were delivered as ordered by runners and Tisch kept in touch and kept us hydrated the rest of the stay. We dined on Monday's Special Ghoulash and Gnocchi, Veal Snitzel and potato salad, Meatballea and Beef Ghoulash soup. Everything was good. Though there are many other nearby places to dine, Zum Leupold, with pleasant al fresco seating that flanks the sidewalks, was impossible to miss. Though many of the tables are outfitted with "reserved" signs and you'll be asked if you have reservations, I dined here twice with no advance reservations, landing an outdoor table on both occasions. Was it a place that's worth dining twice at though? That's the question. Here at Zum Leupold I think one should stick to foods that are traditional to the area and not stray from that regardless of the what's on the menu. Goulash and goulash soup were perfect representations; roast beef far less so. I grew partial to the fried Emmentaler cheese dish that's served with berry jam because, well, fried cheese. I'm uncertain of the origins of this dish but harbor a belief that fried cheese is never a bad thing;in fact, it's quite delicious. Pleasant and tasty if you keep things fairly basic, this full service restaurant proved quite satisfying on both visits.

It was almost 10 minutes before we were acknowledged and given menus. The entire service went that way. It was off putting enough I settled on just a bowl of soup. The beef broth was hot and full of rich flavor. The liver dumpling was huge and also good. Their version of Mac n cheese is spaetzle and cheese. And just like the States, there are fabulous one and ok ones. This was ok. Would I try this spot again? Probably not, there's a lot in this neighborhood. But on the day after Christmas I highly recommend reservations wherever you want to go.

I had dinner at Beim Czaak with a friend when we were in Vienna for a few days earlier this month…read more Open since 1926, Beim Czaak is a Viennese classic, and we ate some classic Austrian dishes: Chilidebreziner sausage with mustard and horseradish; Tafelspitz (beef served in rich, clear broth with root vegetables, and accompanied apple horseradish sauce and potatoes - it's considered Austria's national dish, the favorite of Emperor Franz Joseph I); and Bohemian pancakes with plum jam, sour cream and poppy seed sugar. The food was good overall, as was the wine. However, the service - at least by American standards - was pretty bad, not very friendly or helpful (almost had to resort to begging to get the dessert menu and then our check). The interior of the restaurant is all historic charm, but we sat outside, where there was great people watching. We still enjoyed ourselves, and I did enjoy the food. But Beim Czaak just wasn't a very friendly place, which hampered our experience a little bit. But I can see why it's been around for so many years - I wish I knew how to make that apple horseradish sauce.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by Iaro, a young, patient, and extremely attentive server who made everything easy despite our language limitations. He took the time to explain the menu and give great recommendations. We ordered: * One glass of Rosé vom Cobenzl * Two Gösser house beers * One Cola Zero * Tomato soup and vegetable cream soup (both excellent) * Five Original Wiener Schnitzel (one with potato salad & cranberry sauce, the others with parsley potatoes & cranberry) * One warm chocolate dessert The Schnitzel was large, perfectly crispy, and served the traditional way with lemon. The side potatoes and potato salad were delicious, and the soups were flavorful and well seasoned. The dessert was outstanding rich and balanced chocolate, creamy vanilla ice cream, and an incredible mix of fresh fruit on the side. Perfect ending to the meal. The atmosphere is classic and elegant beautiful wooden bar, outdoor seating on Fleischmarkt, and a warm, traditional feel. They had mostly interior seating, but along the front the windows were almost like doors, so you felt like you were outside. They did have a few (4?) outside tables. We saw one woman eating there until she attracted a bee and asked to be relocated inside. Our server showed up just after 11 a.m. and took our drink orders. Two of us had the soup and salad combo, which was good. I think my soup was tomato. The salad was fresh. The 3rd member of our group got pasta, which she liked also. It was not pretentious in anyway, but for atmosphere and food being served by the perfect wait-staff, maybe it should be. lol! We had an excellent dining experience to remember.
