Auerbachs Keller was made famous by Goethe's great work Faust, and this historic restaurant offers…read morea menu of traditional Saxon dishes in an atmospheric cellar setting. To start, Kalte Köstlichkeiten were a selection of housemade cold appetizers: smoked duck, pork, jellied beef, Wurstsalat (sausage salad), Leberwurst, boiled egg, hot smoked salmon, cured salmon, and three different soft cheeses, along with a side of bread and crispy potato pancakes (similar to hashbrowns). This was definitely my favorite dish thanks to the huge variety of flavors, textures, meats, and preparation methods. Since it was asparagus season during my visit, we ordered Spargel von einem Pfund, a pound of white asparagus served with butter and new potatoes. The white asparagus had a subtle, slightly sweet flavor, which was accented by the melted butter. The daily special was the Wildschweinbraten, slow-cooked pieces of pork covered in a creamy mushroom gravy, served with red cabbage and chewy, buttery potato dumplings. Finally, Martens Gartensalat was a huge mixed salad made of various leaves, along with pickled vegetables, rice salad, lentils, roasted broccoli, marinated mushrooms, dried root vegetable chips, and house smoked/cured salmon--a delicious, refreshing, crunchy mixture featuring so many different flavors! Overall, Auerbach's Keller was a great restaurant to experience traditional German cuisine. The food exceeded my expectations, and the service and traditional atmosphere were highlights too!

We had so much fun, we returned to the big cellar for another meal. It was good hearty Saxon fare. Service was slow and the waitstaff seemed bored, less than interested in us and our experience. I'd make a visit again if in the area.

Their bar is fully stocked and they have a nice selection of alcohol. The beer garden is also nice, large and private. I just wish their food matched the rest of the restaurant's attributes. When my friends and I visited, the restaurant was sold out of the dishes we wanted, the Schnitzel and pork. What was left was unpalatable. For the limited amount of food they make, the offerings should be excellent. First, at the suggestion of a reviewer, we ordered the cream garlic appetizer, which turned out to be jarred mayonnaise with a small amount of garlic with sugar. the bread was fine. My husband's small mixed green salad was good. I ordered the tagliatelle, it was sweet and the sauce was watery. My friend ordered the potato gratin, which was just a thick layer of cheese on top of a large baked potato on a bed of tomatoes and sweet cream sauce. Why is all of the food so sweet? My husband ordered a rice dish with chicken, watery paprika sauce, and no flavor. Over all, we were disappointed and would not return.

We could tell that they learned waitressing and also like their job. The food was also amazing. We had the liver and the Schaufele. And desert... the pear parfait!
