Artsy looking Turkish restaurant in the center of Cologne, decorated with magazine photos,…read moreportraits and an eclectic mix of artifacts. We were seated by a friendly waiter in the front room and after a while I got curious and went exploring since regulars seemed to be going straight to the back room. Indeed, there were a couple other interesting looking rooms, and a cool little bar. But it looks like tourists like us who don't know better are put in display in the front part of the restaurant. Our waiter was apologetic about not being able to find the only English menu the place owns and had to translate the relatively short list of dishes offered. I still wonder if the English version even exists, especially after reading other reviews. Service was very slow, even though it was just my husband and I in that front room. Unfortunately, after all that waiting, the food was disappointing. I am surprised at all the good reviews raving about tasty food. After a week in Germany, we wanted something different from the local food and since my husband had been to a yummy Turkish restaurant in Dusseldorf a few days earlier, we were hoping for a similar experience. No such luck, Artistanbul offers an interesting atmosphere, but that's about it.

That's how good this place is. Different than the dozens of Kabap places lining the streets of Cologne, Kebapland stands out with its friendly and quick service (there's probably going to be a line - there's always a line), charcoal grilled meats, fantastic flavors, authenticity, and different menu items. Having trouble picking between lamb, beef, chicken, or wings as I was? No problem - orders the mixed plate for a small €16 and get a big portion of each. What stood out to me most were the wings. Crispy, charred, and flavorful. If you're in Cologne, this is a MUST TRY. Don't miss the chance for a culinary dream come true.

Despite its kitsch decoration, Kilim is THE BEST place to have exactly the same kind of lahmacuns…read moreyou could have in Sanliurfa or Gaziantep provinces of Turkey in the area surrounding Bonn and Cologne. All sorts of lahmacuns, be them Urfa, Antep or Findik, are very crispy, hearty and tasty as they should be. The amount of onion in Urfa lahmacun and amount of garlic in Antep is very balanced. Icli koftes are highly recommended, too. Even though pides taste good as well, they are one class below lahmacuns and contain too much fat in my opinion. Desserts you could order at the end, including baklava, kadayif and sekerpare, are always fresh and tasty, as they are brought from the konditorei owned by Kilim the next door. Considering all these points, again, Kilim is THE BEST place to taste the genuine Southeastern Anatolian food inspired by Kurdish, Arabic and Turkish cultures, located in Mülheim, Cologne. If I am drooling over my keyboard as I am writing this review, it is a clear sign that Kilim deserves its well-deserved reputation and does not need my further endorsement. :)
