A huge thanks to one of my gym friends who put Avenue K (inside Bengie's NY Deli!) on my radar! A couple of people now have told me about their amazing Reuben and hot pastrami sandwiches. Their website states they've been established since 1967; we're only discovering this little gem of a bar now. From the moment we stepped into the bar, we were greeted by bartender Chanele, immediately making us feel welcome and at ease; between the fun-&-friendly service, enjoyable conversations among the long-time locals surrounding us at the bar top, and the nice pours (at reasonable prices), we felt like regulars, too -- and instant fans!! Our 2nd visit (within a week) was equally enjoyable, with the pleasure of being served by De De. Hubby was eager to try their open-faced Hot Brisket Sandwich ($21.50); he raved about the tenderness and flavor of the beef, highlighting their savory gravy. I'm glad that our bartender brought the Happy Hour menu to my attention; given the time, I figured that Happy Hour was over; however, the menu is good from 3 P.M. until the kitchen closes! Their Bar Burger ($11.50), served with (fabulous) fries, was satisfyingly delicious; I'd initially anticipated having only half my burger (with 2 patties), but couldn't resist finishing my entire plate! Both dishes were generous in size. Again, fun conversations at the bar top, attentive-&-personable service, and tasty comfort food. Great laid-back, comfortable-&-casual vibe.
