The Poor House Bistro definitely has a poor look exterior, but the food menu is RICH in Cajun flavors! http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=E8z40nIghchINTwbBpPRiw&select=CohdfkXg8_6Yr4xEzEvn9Q WHEN: Saturday 7/23/11, 4pm-ish (My sister's birthday) WHERE: Address is 91 S. Autumn St with W. Fernando St as main cross street. Less than 1-mile South of the HP Pavilion (a few major street light intersections) & just West of Hwy 87. Parking on the street or turn left into their backside parking lot. AMBIANCE: Really does look like a "poor house" from the in/outside, but the simplicity of this restaurant is great along w/ menu & service. Wood table seating, wood armless chairs, & indoor/outdoor seating. Friendly for all shapes & sizes; kid friendly & senior citizen friendly (make sure they can handle the Cajun heat tho); wheel-chair accessible with parking in back of restaurant w/ ramp. Outdoor stage for live band visible for outdoor seating & few spots of indoor seating http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=8z2yNXFdC1BiPWmSOp-eWg http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=QOIlSfegObID7gRo0dUHog CUST SERVICE: Polite & patient cashier service. Cooking staff is prompt; we waited no more than several minutes for food pick-up after placing the order. We were a lil confused if we had to bus our own tables & where to put empty dishes, but someone eventually came around. Overall, good service. DINNING IN: My sister wanted to enjoy a South Bay night club, but needed help deciding where we could go eat prior. Once again, looking to the help of my fellow Yelpers, I selected Poor House Bistro. Non-waiter service, review menu, place your order, pay, receive notifier gadget (or what I like to say "the waiting vibrator"), get your eating utensils/napkins/drink, pick your seat inside/outside, gadget goes off, then take gadget to pick-up counter to get ur eats. PHB turned out to be a really good selection for me, my sis, & our cousins http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=YKJA-MzJZrcYVLN89CfBgQ TASTES: If it ain't a salad, it's definitely packin' some Cajun heat, so be warned! The food is excellent, price is definitely affordable, portion sizes are fulfilling, but if it says it's spicy, IT IS! $4.75 Large Cajun Fries http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=3fuTmxH9vuJaQ-j3secLNQ Good portion, good price, & ok fries. $8.25 Sausage Bread http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=6JxBY8WGjMq6PbgI7hqaCw This is a must have app! Creative version like a pocket sandwich, but as a roll. Ground seasoned pork rolled inside bread, just a nice combo. Comes sliced, easy to handle & eat, & worth trying every visit. Shareable btw 2-4ppl. $8.25 Large Caesar Salad http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=kzLqr6g865tXwHysLuGbKQ Fresh & good. Worthy of having. $7.75 Bowl Chicken & Sausage Gumbo (comes w/ side of bread) http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=hBsgjp9ldfz_u0ew0XzLVQ First scoop in & my sis immediately tasted the Cajun spices. Hot, flavorful, well seasoned, & gets a recommendation. $9.25 BBQ Shrimp Po Boy http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=ubHBm7gTEN2tqCLQ84og1w My cousin & I should've read the print "spicy sauce" w/ more caution 'cuz it was definitely spicy! Although this Po Boy was scrum-didly-umptous, if you were sitting across the table from me like my sister, u would've thought I had a cold w/ all the sniffing I was doing throughout this sandwich. Did the spices & the sniffing slow me down w/ this sandwich tho...hell to the no! French roll held up w/ all the juices nicely, plenty of shrimp, & fresh vegs made this all the more tasty. $4.75 Beignets http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=mLUsbXRMScWFPNZbXUYNpQ http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=J-BififwFrINlPYdPifcUA Good price, good portion, & tasty! Slightly "airy", & more than enough powder sugar. 3 warm beignets to plate, & definitely satisfying. Shareable btw 2ppl. FINAL TAB: For a party of 4, we spent $59.86, no tipping necessary. This included: 2 Po Boys, 1 Bowl of Gumbo, 1 Sausage Bread, 1 Lg Caesar Salad, 1 Lg Cajun Fries, & 4 Fountain Drinks http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=3Go2Xi8npn91K_HqTyqBAg I definitely would like to revisit this place soon & bring my BF...nice to see someone else sniff sniff while eating so I know it's not just me =p Menu: Starters $2 - $8.25 http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=lRmQU7167u6iNxp9wmiH8w Menu: Soups & Salads $4.50 - $10.25 http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=1n4Y0hh08vSKHYcajP8SPQ Menu: Seafood Po Boys $9.25 http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=q-lk5yziiCPSJCqqeHaD7g Menu: Sweets $4.75 - $5.95 http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FDgwFVBzybkFsNfZdIIFjQ?select=tarG1NxHNiXlUstILRGI read more
