From Stephanie's review

READ BEFORE HIRING. This company goes by the names Anything in Wood and Crown Rail. I hired this company based off of the more than 100 five-star reviews on their website and Angi's List. I found Laura's review too late. During my initial conversation with Michael, he said he would be managing and overseeing the entire project with his crew, which I quickly learned was not the case. Michael is the owner and subcontracts Ben and Chris to perform the demolition/installation. He also subcontracts a painter who stains the wood and touches up the wall paint. Not having a project manager created numerous challenges, including schedule overruns, lack of communication, and ultimately an unprofessional end product. I was told by Michael that the project would take 2 days and it took 13 days from start to finish. I am now left with a mess that needs to be fixed. Despite numerous phone calls and emails to Michael during the entire project voicing concerns, he never showed up after the initial interview and sale. On Day 1, after the handrail demo and install I immediately noticed the two longest handrail pieces were spliced together and the colors were noticeably different. I sent pictures to Michael and after voicing my concern, he replaced those from a local supplier (original ones from TX new ones from CO). I was worried that since the wood grain was substantially different, they would stain different, and they did. These two handrails sit side-by-side up the stairs so it's easy to see the difference. After leaving on Friday, I asked when the balusters were going to be installed, because I have children. At no time was I told that we would be without balusters for nearly 2 weeks or I would have never agreed to the project. When I asked when the painter would be staining the handrails Michael told me to contact him. This is when I quickly learned Michael would not be managing the project and that job would now fall on me (in between my day job). It turns out, Michael had booked the painter on another project, so that cost me 3 more days. The stain we tested on a sample piece of white oak looked great on the original handrails but turned the replacement ones orange. When I called Michael to see what we could do he told me nothing, that the painter sent him a picture and he thought it looked beautiful. I then asked the painter to try and sand the railings in order to remove some of the orange hue. When the painters left, I noticed there was paint splattered on the walls, handrails, and hardware. I sent a picture to Michael and told him that it needed to be fixed. The next day while the painter came to fix the work, Michael texted several times asking when Ben and Chris could come over to install the balusters. Instead of Michael telling the painter that I pushed the install to the next day so he could finish, the painter thought we had to finish that day and in turn used a blow dryer to rush the drying process which bubbled the paint on the trim pieces. After calling Michael again to express my concerns, he started to raise his voice, talk over me, and told me I needed to learn patience. Then he hung up on me. Great guy. The day of the install, only Ben showed up (an hour late), despite being told that they would both be at my house by 9 am. When I asked Ben if he was going to use a rectangular drill bit for the iron balusters, he said they were too expensive so instead they install the balusters upside down with the circular part going into the trim. I questioned it, but he said that's how they do it for a secure fit. After the balusters were installed, the wood cracked in several places, and I noticed that the round part of the balusters was visibly raised from the trim. There were also small screws securing some of them. When questioned again, Ben said that painter always comes over after to caulk, paint, and clean it up. When the painter came over the next day, he said he never comes back to finish up a project after baluster installation and that mine looked really bad. Since this mess, I've had three other contractors look at the end product that all said it was not professionally done. None of them could understand why they intentionally installed the balusters upside down and then tried to secure them with screws drilled into the side of the metal. The caulk is cracking, and the paint is peeling. I contacted Michael and went through the things that would need to be fixed, since I was told their work was guaranteed. He said he would not be back and to hire someone else to fix it. This project already cost me over $7k (not including my time to manage his project) and was one of the worst jobs I've ever seen. I was very upfront with Michael about my expectations for this project before we started, and he said he understood. He's a salesman focused on the sale, not customer service or quality work. He's patronizing, rude, dishonest, and difficult to work with. I would NOT recommend. read more
