I never leave reviews but this experience warranted one. We rented a 14 foot fishing boat from Tyler Angel at Beacon Boat Rentals. When I called to reserve it for my husband, Tyler said that the boat was "nothing to look at but it runs well". There were no photos of this boat on the website, which in retrospect, was a clue that there was a problem.
Three day rental was $300 plus a $50 delivery fee. My husband arrived at the dock and paid cash so he dropped it to $300. He was not given a throwable floatation device as "it must have flown out of the boat on the way to the launch". This boat was terrible. My husband said he should have refused it when he saw it but felt bad because I arranged for him to have a fishing boat for our one week vacation on Lake Cobbossee.
He used it a little bit on Monday after he picked it up but the gas fumes were so bad that he gave up. He used it a little bit on Tuesday evening in the cove. Wednesday morning he took it out and the motor died within 10 minutes. He had to use the oars which didn't have any oar locks, and had his line in the water when he got a bite. It was a pike so he grabbed the pole and at that point one on the oars landed in the water. He was dealing with the fish which ended up stealing his favorite lure as he is watching the oar tip up like the titanic and sink. A reasonable person would think that 1. the oars would have oar locks 2. If they didn't have oar locks that they wouldn't sink!
My husband made it back to the house using one oar. It's only 7:30 am and the boat is dead. He called Tyler to let him know that the engine failed and he waited for him to return his call. By the time someone came to the house and fixed the motor it was around 3pm. We were supposed to return the boat at 5pm but I called and asked about keeping it longer since it didn't run on day three. We paid $300 cash for a three day rental and certainly didn't get what we paid for. Tyler's response was not what we had hoped for. We returned his boat early, he kept our cash and I'm banking on karma to take care of the rest. read more
