I paid these people $120 for a tune-up and related costs. That is the most I have ever paid for a bike tune-up. I was willing to pay that in exchange for professional service. I did not get that. The rear brake was not adjusted: I had to squeeze nearly to the handgrip to get it to stop the bike. This is dangerous: a rider pulling evenly on front and rear brakes to stop quickly would be at risk of flying over his/her handlebars, as the front brake grabbed while the rear one failed to do so. Later, I found that they had done the cabling wrong as well: their work quickly fell apart, and now the rear brake was grabbing at random times, especially after hitting a bump. I had to take the bike to another shop to get that redone, at considerable additional cost. The front derailleur was not adjusted correctly: the chain would not go onto the large sprocket, and it was rattling from misalignment on the others. The rear derailleur would drift from one gear to the next, changing gears unexpectedly five or ten seconds after I shifted. That, too, was dangerous: one time, on another bike, I broke a collarbone when the chain skipped unexpectedly and threw me off balance while I was pedaling hard. The tires were not even fully inflated, and there was no cap on the valve stem of the rear tire. When they put the front bike tire on, they knocked the speedometer sensor out of the way, and didn't even bother moving it back to its proper position afterwards. I spent about 15 minutes going over some of this with the proprietor when I arrived to pick up the bike. I had another appointment, so I wound up having to make another trip, and spending the better part of an hour the second time, going over all these things. The guy seemed very agreeable about trying again and again to adjust the derailleurs, and that would have been great if we were just buddies and he was trying to help me out. But in this case I had paid all that money to discover the problems on my own time and at my own risk, and then explain them to him, and then watch and help while he kept trying to get them right, and in some regards he never did.
