We wanted to make a week-long camping reservation in the U.P. on very short notice due to an unsure work schedule, and Brimley was the only place where we could reserve the same campsite for more than one day (instead of bouncing to a different site every day). We stayed at campsite 205 for M-Th and one extra night on campsite 222 for Friday. Both were lakefront sites, and we were surprised to get what we thought were prime spots. We were only 15 minutes from Sault Ste. Marie (a place I had never visited before), which was convenient, and the Brimley-Bay Mills area is very nice and quant.
On the reservation website, it's very hard to tell how big the campsites really are (some don't even have pictures), as they all seemed to come in different sizes and shapes. Most of the campsites along the lake were very small and narrow, which was perfect for us since we only have one small car and one tent. Our neighbor next to us had a 20' camper and a mid-sized truck, and his camper and truck literally took up every inch of his campsite. Another guy down the road had a slightly larger camper and didn't even have enough room to park his truck on his site. If you plan on reserving a lucrative lakefront site, be very weary of how much space you're going to take up. Most of the interior campsites were plenty large enough for massive RVs and large family groups, but the whole campground seemed very cramped. All of the lakefront sites have private lake access through the tree barrier to the clean beach that stretches the entire length of the park.
The campground was packed to full capacity, and the campground was a large daycare for tons of kids meaninglessly riding their bikes up and the down the narrow streets at all hours of the day. Everyone seemed to have a barking dog. The restrooms and showers were adequate and clean enough, and the park staff was always present and friendly. For some reason, they don't sell ice, but the party store across the street does. Other than a nice beach and playground area, the state park doesn't really have much else to offer other than a place to camp to visit other nearby destinations. read more
