Chili Thai recently opened in mid-April 2019. They took over the space that used to be Occo Kitchen on St. Joseph, so it's mostly a takeout place, but there is a small counter there where you can eat in if you want (but it would be eating out of the takeout containers).
My brother picked up some takeout for lunch for himself, my dad, and I, since we wanted to check up on our dad, who had been fending for himself while my mom was on a vacation getaway with her sisters (poor Dad, lol).
We got lunch portions of 4 dishes: the Pad Thai ($11.95), Pad Se-iew ($11.95), Chicken Basil Stir-fry ($9.95), and Beef Penang Curry ($11.95). We got mild for the Pad Se-iew and Curry, and medium spice for the Pad Thai and Stir-fry. These guys aren't joking around with their spice levels. The medium was a true medium, manageable, but spicy enough that my lips were tingling.
The Pad Se-iew was good. It had thin slices of lean beef, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms and onions. The noodles were soft. This dish is usually pretty benign in flavour (or at least all the versions that I've had), so I wasn't expecting a flavour punch. The dish was a bit oily for my tastes, but not too bad.
The Pad Thai was ok. It didn't taste all that authentic to me and lacked the tang and depth of flavour that I like with this dish. It came with chicken, bean sprouts, eggs, and green onions.
The chicken basil stir-fry was good. It had a lot of bamboo in it, which I usually don't like, but these bamboo shoots were slivered and didn't have that funky smell that bamboo sometimes has, so I didn't mind the bamboo. It also had onions, green beans, and bell peppers. There was a subtle basil flavour and since we got it medium spice, it had a kick to it. The chicken was lean and I enjoyed it. It came with white rice.
The beef Penang curry was very rich, coconutty and peanutty, lol. It had lean beef slices, bell peppers and peanuts. It came with white rice.
Overall, the food was good, but I feel that the flavours weren't as potent or distinctive, with the exception of the Penang Curry. They are new though, so I'll definitely try them again.
The parking situation at this restaurant is not great. There are a strip of stores and the parking is just one row right in front of the stores. St. Joseph is a busy street, so if the spots are full, it's hard to maneuver your way in and out. read more
