The Eusebiuskerk is THE big church in the old center of Haarlem, and it's also the tallest building in the whole city (93 meters). The first stone was laid in 1452 but the church was severely damaged during World War II, specifically during the fighting around Operation Market Garden. The church was completely burnt out and the tower actually collapsed. The 'bare bones' i.e. exterior of the church remained and was restored between 1946 and 1961, with the current church tower being built during the restoration period. The church is no longer used for religious services but rather as a tourist attraction - you can even take an elevator up to the top of the church tower to enjoy the view.
It is currently (until 2017/18) the temporary home of Het Gelders Orkest while their existing home, the Musis Sacrus, is being renovated. His directly impacts when the church is open to the public, since when there orchestra is rehearsing you can't come in and wander around. So be sure to check the website if the Eusebiuskerk before visiting - and check the website if the orchestra if you are interested in taking in a concert! read more
