I know that the Caribbean community has their pick of places for Indo-Caribbean cuisine AND I PROMISE you that you would NOT be disappointed in the doubles and customer service the newly opened Debe Kitchen on Nostrand Ave in Brooklyn.
I drove 7 hours from Boston (typically a 3.75 hour ride) because I had a taste for doubles. Yes, foodies like me do crazy things for the love of food. This is the best doubles I've had in the US so far and I've eaten plenty. If you can't get to Debe Doubles Shed in South Trinidad, this is the next best thing.
Yesterday, he this husband and wife team was living and working a dream. If that is not love, I don't know what is. I will definitely be back and I'm telling everybody.
Thank you for putting up with my many phone calls inquiring about the status of doubles and closing.
I should probably explain what doubles is for the non Caribbean readers. Doubles is a Trini street food made of curried chick peas (channa) and bara (a fluffy, fried bread with a yeast based dough), mainland Indians might liken it to chole bhature
If you're like me and you won't have good doubles again unless you make it yourself or drive back to NYC, you get bara, channa and condiments packaged separately so that you could freeze it for later use. Oh, I forgot to mention that they make fresh kuchela.
