Absolutely Worth the Drive - Devil's Backbone State Park is a Hidden Gem!
I recently visited Tennessee's newest state park, Devil's Backbone, and it completely exceeded my expectations. Located right along the historic Natchez Trace Parkway in Hohenwald, this park feels like a true escape into nature.
The setting is stunning -- over 1,500 acres of mature Western Highland Rim forest that has remained largely undisturbed for at least 60 years. The main 3.5-mile trail is rugged and rewarding, with a moderate-to-strenuous 220-foot elevation change that takes you through beautiful woods, past creeks, and plenty of opportunities to spot native wildlife. It's the perfect hike for anyone who loves peaceful, immersive forest trails.
What makes this park especially unique is its exclusive access directly from the Natchez Trace Parkway. There's something special about pulling off this historic route and stepping into such a pristine natural area. The connection to the Parkway's rich history (including its ancient roots and the old stories of bandits and outlaws) adds an extra layer of fascination.
Opened in March as an official Tennessee State Park after years as a State Natural Area, Devil's Backbone is a fantastic addition to the system. It's currently day-use only, which keeps the experience quiet and uncrowded -- exactly what many of us are looking for.
If you're anywhere near the Natchez Trace, do yourself a favor and make the stop. Whether you're a hiker, nature lover, or just someone who appreciates beautiful, well-protected public lands, this park delivers. Highly recommend!
