Located inside the Circle K at 5 Points, between the convenience store and Santino's, Down Home Kitchen might strike you as a place that would have stale, fried, and sub-par grub. You'd be stricken wrong. There are fresh vegetable sides, home cooked main dishes, and everything is better than average for quality and taste. There are some things that aren't made from scratch (I'm thinking about you, mashed potatoes), but the relative rarity these days of cheap, hot, not-from-a-can, ready-to-eat meals is enough to excuse such things. Every week day has a different special...although I can't remember what day has what. There's delicious beef tips and gravy, fried chicken, turkey and dressing, stuff like that. I've had the beef tips several times and they are tender, tasty, and the gravy is awesome. This is a hybrid Blue Plate joint. You get a meat, two sides, and a bread for $5.99. No dessert or drink included. Of course, this being adjacent to the Circle K, you can pop next door and get a capacious schooner of soda for 79 cents. I think that the Circle K also has a case full of Krispy Kremes, too. Five Points is an oasis in a commercial wasteland. There are more options than there used to be, but having an option for a healthier lunch or snack is welcome. I stop in here to get something to eat at work before I begin the trek across Quintette...it would be worth the drive from 90 to check it out, if you are in the area. read more
