One of the first courthouses built in Ontario, the facility was recently remodeled and expanded to consolidate the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice into one modern facility. Topped with a beautiful dome, the structure is in the Palladian-style and was originally designed by architect John Turner and built in 1854 from stone and yellow brick. It was heavily damaged by a fire in 1898 and repaired/expanded. A newer update was completed in 2014. One of the first of its kind, the courthouse is a prominent example of the combined courthouse, jail and county buildings erected by counties in many parts of Canada between 1849 and 1867 when such facilities were a requirement to achieve full county status. Very little street parking nearby, which is odd. I found a "15 minutes only" spot in front and was able to walk some of the grounds. A security guard said that there are lots a couple of blocks away. Good luck if you are here to attend a trial but if you do attend, don't miss the detailing and plaster moldings and profiles throughout.
