Family owned and operated since 1903, Fugetsu-Do has been a LA staple for its tasty mochi and manju made fresh daily. The store reminds me of the equally historic Benkyodo with its small, unassuming layout. The lighting isn't as great but nothing can distract visitors from studying their glass case full of wrapped manju, mochi, and assortments of Japanese snacks. I came here with fellow Yelpers Michelle T and her boyfriend Tony, Andrew F, Ching T, Tony Y. Jr, Antho L, and Ken C, and walked away with Kiku Manju ($1.10), Grape Mochi ($1.10), Sudari Manju ($1.10), and a package of six Korey's Chocolate mochi ($4).
The Kiku Manju was the best along with the package of Korey's Chocolate Mochi for their ultra soft texture. The white beans embedded in the Kiku Manju was flavorful but not as sweet as Benkyodo while the Korey's Chocolate Mochi were made flat with an exquisite layer of dark chocolate center that was quite a delicious surprise. Although the Sudari Manju has a nice layer of sweet jelly candy to nicely complement its semi-sweet white beans fillings, but the texture was less refined than what I'm used to. The Grape mochi was equally stiff and sticky and tasted artificial as my least favorite of the bunch.
Unlike Benkyodo my order came in a bag and was not wrapped into a tray to keep fresh. Aside from this, the servers were very knowledgeable and efficient in dealing with the big crowd of visitors. Overall, I thought the selections of mochi and manju were pretty good but the texture of these colorful confections could be more refined. Price is comparable to other Mochi stores. I would definitely be interested in returning for more. read more
