The short version: the studio is dirty and poorly maintained, the instructors and classes are inconsistent, and the owner Vanessa is both unfit to run a business and highly unpleasant and irrational to deal with. In general, the Function Pilates brand of pilates is very basic, meant for older people, it's not athletic pilates and it's not going to get you looking toned. If that's what you're looking for, I recommend Reformed Pilates!
The long version: I was this studio's number 1 founding member and attended more classes here during their first year open than anybody else. I tried so hard to make it work because of how close it is to my house. However, when I gave Vanessa very professional and well-intended feedback on how she could improve her newly opened studio (deep cleaning more regularly, moving fake plants to not block the limited mirror space, putting up blinds so that customers aren't being blinded by the sun during class), she responded insulting me personally, indicating that she didn't like the energy I was bringing to her studio, and then declining my request to cancel my membership and instead offering me free months on top of my existing contract--what sense does that make? Vanessa, being an invited guest into somebody's house is not comparable to being a paying patron of a very expensive luxury business.
We could have simply agreed to disagree and moved on with our lives. Instead, Vanessa refused to refund me until I threatened to sue her. Then she agreed to refund me, but only if I signed an NDA agreeing not to share my experiences with her or her studio. I ultimately had to take her to small claims court to get my money back. It was one of the most illogical interactions I've ever had with a business owner, all over just over $1000. Spoiler alert, I won. Was great seeing you in court, Vanessa! I hope you'll consider handling things more professionally going forward and accepting feedback at face value rather than getting emotional and upset that your studio members would rather be able to check their form in the mirrors than look at your tacky fake feng shui tree. read more
