The Witte Huis or The White House was the first skyscraper built in Europe in 1898. The art nouveau building was the tallest building in The Netherlands and Europe when it was built.
The building was constructed of steel, bricks, iron and concrete. 1000 piles were driven into the ground to support the structure as there were concerns about the soft foundation.
It was one of the few buildings in central Rotterdam to survive the bombing campaigns during World War II.
