This is my second time to go to Magic Nails. The first time was ok, this time a little less so but not enough to go back again. Both times I was in for a simple pedicure and regular nail polish (not gel, not artificial nails). Didn't want extra massage time, a sugar scrub, acid poured on my heels and dead skin removed, nor did I need a manicure. There is a serious attempt at upsell, which I understand as it seems to be the protocol at every salon these days and they are trying to drive revenue and just stay in business. But it can be tedious to be asked too many times which was definitely the case on my first visit. The lady who led me to my chair today handed me a guide that showed many different colors to choose from and checked that the water temp was ok and not too hot.
A young man provided my pedicure. I told him the color I selected and he said "not that one". And handed me a spool with a lot of other colors to choose from, once again he tried to talk me into the $15 gel upgrade, but I was not interested in having a $50 service nor do I think they last any longer for that additional cost as nails grow out pretty fast. Although there were a lot of colors to choose from, there were not a lot in the shade of red/orange I normally choose. At least not for basic nail enamel. Perhaps more in the gel category. It was a decent pedicure. $35 plus tip. Place was pretty empty on a Tuesday afternoon. Myself and two others while I was there. Service was good but not overly friendly. They do have one TV, not sure what it was running, mostly European areal city pictures. Would have been nice to have had a program with subtitles, maybe news, food network, hgtv, something, anything. But I had my phone so used that instead.
Pedicures and manicures are definitely in the discretionary category, especially these days with high inflation. I think this establishment will need to either lower prices, offer friendlier more professional service or be creative by adding value in ways other nail salons are not. Or they will be gone unfortunately. read more
