I was walking through beautiful Cypress Grove Park when I discovered this sweet statue of two children sharing an umbrella. Dan McCartney, a local resident, donated the statue to honor the founder of Russell House, Vantrease Russell who was lovingly known as Grandma Russell. The statue was dedicated in May of 2006.
Russell House was the first of its kind when it was established in 1951 as a licensed home for children with special needs. The seed for the home was planted when Mrs. Russell's doctor asked if she could care for a child with special needs. She agreed even though she had seven children of her own. Through the years the Russell House has cared for more than 1,500 physically and mentally challenged children. They have relied completely on private funding and revenue generated from their thrift store. This memorial statue was placed in Cypress Grove Park because it neighbors the Russell House and often served as a place for Russell to take the children on outings. Mrs. Russell was a woman ahead of her time. As someone who works with children with special needs, I admire her dedication and huge heart.
In addition to the plaque honoring Vantrease Russell there is also one on the base honoring Mrs. Barbara Bozeman. Mrs. Bozeman was dedicated to local politics and civic affairs and she ran for Orange County Commissioner in 1990. She served as an active member of the Holden Avenue Inter-Neighborhood Council, the Orange County Homeowner's Association, the Orange Blossom Trail Re-development Board, and the Lake Jessamine Water Advisory Board. She was also a member of the Orange County Planning and Zoning Commission. She was instrumental in preserving the Holden Avenue neighborhood and securing Cypress Grove Park, for the community. What a blessing that she was able to preserve this wonderful park. If you ever have the chance to visit, I highly recommend it. read more
