Since moving to The Ozarks at the beginning of 2022, we've been interested in a tornado shelter and researched them online as to types, prices and wait times. Tornados aren't a huge issue here but there have been some, including one two years ago that destroyed homes a couple miles away, with a steel, above-ground, garage shelter saving lives. I didn't want an outdoor underground shelter because who wants to run outside in a storm? I didn't want an underground shelter in the garage because you would have to move the cars first and could be buried under debris. The in-garage, above-ground steel shelters were very expensive with ridiculous wait times for installation. At a neighborhood block party, a neighbor showed me a New Day shelter in his garage. It was perfect for our needs. I emailed the company, was quoted a very reasonable flat rate, out-the-door price, including delivery and installation. Dirk said he could install it the following week. We couldn't find anything better than that! He showed up and installed it in nothing flat. He has the drop-off and installation process down to a one-man art. He explained everything in detail. There are some great, but very simple design/engineering concepts involved here. 1200 pounds of three/eighths inch steel, re-purposed propane tank anchored to the concrete with an easy but heavy-duty, bolt-shut door. The safety/escape measures are also simple and effective. Very impressive. The interior dimensions are 72 inches high and 42 inches wide. I'm 6 foot 3 and can stand up in it no problem. In a pinch, you could cram 5 people inside. Myself, my wife and our two cats are confident we can ride out anything mother nature throws at us going forward. Highly recommended! read more
