The Northampton County Museum is located in Jackson, NC. I parked nearby behind a building. The museum is open just a few days a week and admission is donation-based. The staff was welcoming and friendly and willing to share the county's history and offer suggestions of other places to visit.
The museum's focus is on Northampton's history and heritage. The artifacts help tell that story. They have a 1900 country store with all the items sold at that time; a hands-on children's area where the kids can go fishing or learn about what the wood looks like on the trees in the area. You will learn about agriculture's importance in the area, the crops grown, and the tools used. There is a display about George Moses Horton. Another exhibit focuses on Marquis de Lafayette, the Hero of Two Worlds, who stopped in the county. Another permanent exhibit is of Sir Archie, a thoroughbred stallion. It was fun looking at the political mementoes from over the years. Some of the exhibits are a work in progress, but they are working on the notable African Americans in the area. read more
