Walkable, long beach, with very light surf and wide area to play around. It was very busy on tuesday afternoon, even though it was very cloudy. Plenty of families were camped out in any open space, enjoying the summer weather. The sand is fine to very fine (great for sand castle building I bet), with no rocks or pebbles, so everybody was walking barefoot everywhere. There were a lot of folks playing beach games (this would be the place to come to checkout what the latest beach game craze is). There is a very large parking lot at the south end of the beach, with parking owned and managed by the city. Rate is $7 per hour, 1 hour minimum. To get to it, one has to pass through an intersection with no stop sign...need to be patient and careful to get through that during the day. There are a lot of facilities here, including a row of restaurants selling various fast food. There is also a very good, finer dining restaurant nearby (Lobster House) with very reasonable prices and killer views....but you can't wear your swimwear in there. We started at the south end walking near the surf, but soon realized how long it was. It's probably close to a mile, before you hit the next beach which is Footbridge Beach. The beach faces the East...I bet the sunrise is really great here (on a non-cloudy day...those exist in Maine, right?). read more
