The only interesting feature of Paisley Close happens to be the monument above the entryway. It's of a 12 year old boy named Joseph McIver who was rescued after a 7-story tenement building suddenly collapsed in 1861. There were 35 of 77 residents killed that day. This kid may have been one of them had he not called out to the firemen, "Heave awa' chaps, I'm not dead yet." The tragic event would bring on a movement to tear down and rebuild all the dilapidated buildings along the Royal Mile. The famous Edinburgh sculptor, John Rhind, was commissioned to create the sculpture over the arch. It's a miraculous story that lives on through this monument to the boy who lived on Paisley Close. read more
