TL;DR: Phoenix does shit quality work, will not fix it or make it right, and they'll charge you insane prices and then blame you for not knowing they were screwing you over. Don't give them your money! -- In March 2021 I contracted with Phoenix to perform enough work on my house to make it livable after my previous contractor had bailed leaving a mess behind. They came recommended by my interior designer who I trust with my life, so even though it was incredibly expensive, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place: I needed to be able to live in my home, and it was the height of the pandemic and construction services were in insane demand. So I was grateful to get squeezed in by Phoenix & ponied up accordingly. I had them perform the following list of work: - Bring electrical up to code - Install hardwood flooring - Install trim & millwork - Install window What's unfortunate is that instead of actually helping me, Phoenix screwed me over royally. This list of work cost me over $24000. The electrical was great. The window, fine. The trim and millwork, acceptable (the bathroom had a tile pencil trim installed that was crooked and I basically tore it down later since it looked so bad). But the hardwood flooring was INCREDIBLY subpar and will cost me a great deal of money to fix. I've attached photos for you to verify everything I'm including in this review, because I don't believe Phoenix will be honest about what they did based on the fact they refuse to be accountable for their installation. This hardwood flooring cost me $10/sq ft. I had already procured it and asked for it to be installed in two small bedrooms; in total around 300 sq feet of flooring. Phoenix charged me $3600 to do the installation, so that's $22/sq ft for my flooring install. This was REALLY nice hardwood flooring, solid hickory pre-finished. Not cheap stuff at all. After we went through a couple of seasons, we started noticing huge problems in the floor. You could walk across it and it felt like you were walking across waves, it was so uneven. HUGE gaps appeared (1/4 inch+), and in some cases the planks swelled and the pressure literally caused the wood to crack. Buckling, gapping, nothing was right about this flooring. So I contacted Phoenix asking about the flooring, trying to understand if there was something we needed to do to help the floors. Phoenix pointed their finger at EVERYTHING except their installation, even though they admitted to not following the manufacturer's installation instructions! They blamed my basement being wet, the sub flooring they "didn't install" (but was brand new, glued, screwed, & with joists every 12 inches on center underneath), the lack of insulation, the lack of HVAC conditioning the space, the fact they didn't provide the flooring & that it was stored in an unheated garage prior to installation, on & on. The funny thing is, the contractor I hired a year later had their flooring sub install the EXACT same flooring (same lot even) stored in the same conditions at the same time of year, and you know what? That flooring is absolutely flawless a year later, going through all the seasons. Because they properly acclimated the wood, tested it for moisture, heated the space with space heaters & put a dehumidifier in to reduce the moisture in the air. Even after we had "corrected" all the things Phoenix blamed the flooring issues on, they still refused to even come and look at the issue, let alone fix it. If Phoenix knew that all of these things were going to be an issue and would cause the installation to fail, they should have been honest and refused the job. I lived on sub flooring for 8 months & could have done the same thing for the bedrooms if needed, & would have, rather than see my expensive wood damaged & with a voided warranty. Now I get to pay someone else to fix Phoenix's disastrous "work". They'll probably claim that they were doing me a favor, but you're not doing anyone a favor when you take advantage of their desperate situation& have them pay you to do an unbelievably poor job they have to fix later. read more
