I was making my 5 block stroll to my conference when I chanced on this food truck. They were so chill that I did not immediately identify who the owner was, until money exchanged between him and the customers.
A man in a suit was avidly browsing through the selection when I remarked: "Man it all looks good, I dunno what to choose!"
"Trust me, my friend--it IS all good. They all have good flavor!" Done!
So I grabbed a clam shell and quickly plopped in beans and rice into the small compartments, then filled the large compartment half full of pulled pork. I could not find fried plantains, so I doused a corner of my pulled pork with hot sauce and paid up...
I was half stunned to find my princely breakfast to be priced at $4. Maybe I've been in SF long enough to shift!
The beans were tender and the gravy was creamy and slightly sticky. The rice had a light oiling. Combined, the frijoles-arroz combo immediately transported me back to numerous meals staple in Central America and the Carribean. Mild, unassuming but deeply satisfying.
The pulled pork flaked and chewed easily. It had a tempered dark meat overtone that never got funky. It was once again very restrained in its flavor profile, and was perfect with the mild Valentino Hot Sauce I applied on the side. read more
