Indianapolis is the beneficiary of a grant to the Public Art for Neighborhoods Program which provides funds for local artists to create art for their own locales. One of the art installations is along the West Drive of the White River Parkway between Stringtown and the IUPUI Campus (between the bridges at New York and Michigan Streets.)
Near the top of the sloping green space, twelve cutouts of native river fish are mounted in three groups of four. Each group has steel cutout images of Bass, Bluegill, Catfish, and Crappie. The 2D images are reinforced by perpendicular side panels for stability that also catch the wind for these kinetic sculptures.
The art was created by artists James Viewegh and Nathaniel Foley, both faculty at Univ. of Indianapolis, with assistance from art student Maya Johnson and engineering students.
The art pays homage to the river life and the initiative to improve the quality of the river. It also pays homage to the tradition of fishing along the river that is strongly tied to Stringtown.
For convenience, there are several pull off spots along the parkway that allow free 2 hour parking to visitors.
