Rockdale Park is located near the environmentally sensitive Pine Rockland Preserve. Pine Rockland is a globally endangered ecosystem. It is only located in south Miami, the Keys, and parts of the Bahamas. Pine Rockland once covered 180,000 acres or 12 percent of Miami but by the time Miami turned 100 in 1996, less than 2 percent remained. Today only fragments of the Pineland remain. There are over 225 species of native plants here, 20 percent of which are found nowhere else in the world. Five of the plant species are listed as federally endangered.
Rockdale Park is a three acre park passive park designed to be used by dog owners. It is one of the largest out of fourteen dog parks in Miami Dade County. Unlike a typical dog park where different areas are fenced, the whole three acres are open. There are benches and trash cans so dog owners can clean up waste. The park is open to anyone else who wants to walk as well but be aware that there may be unleashed dogs. Rockdale Park is dedicated to encouraging dog owners to frolic, run, play, chase, and roll about within its borders. This is one park in Miami that is really for the dogs. read more
