For a rest stop, Sarni is much different than our typical American rest stop, it's more like a deli, cafeteria, convenience store and mini grocery rolled into one.
My bus to Naples stopped here for a bathroom break and I was glad to find these in decent condition. You never know with rest stops. Thankfully there were toilet paper, toilet seats, hooks to hang up bags, receptacles for trash in each stall. Handsoap available, good water pressure and working hand dryers.
The rest of the store had a lot to offer--about half the store was dedicated to fast food, which in the Italian sense seems to mean slow food, prepared and ready to eat, hence "fast." This included many varieties of paninis, pizza, calzones, pastries, though much more too. They have a baguette sandwiches and wraps filled with all manner of aged meats and cheese, a hot bar with pasta, grilled meats, snd sides, a cold bar of prepared charcuterie, crudités and cheese--served on ceramic plates with metal cutlery, not your disposable (and non-recyclable, environmentally unfriendly) plastic like we have in the states. Food is prepped in display cases and ready to go, like the individual slices of pie and servings of meatballs you see in an IKEA cafeteria style dining hall. Food can be reheated if you prefer. A corner seating area fit for around 50 people at 4 and 6-top tables with shiny metal backed cafe chairs rounds out the dining setup.
The other half of the store sells candies, snacks, cookies, and drinks like a convenience store, though additionally carries souvenir items of everything from the aforementioned items to liquors, pasta, stationary, household items, the list goes on. Some groceries like rice, bread, dried and canned foods, sauces and condiments, herbs and spices also make the list.
Checkout for the eat-in/takeaway food is at the food counter and for the rest of the products checkout is a single register at the front of the store, in between entry and exit. Prices seemed pretty reasonable and not gouging. read more
