I have walked by this place many times and been meaning to try it. Today one of our friends who likes eating here, suggested we try it for dinner and, off we went. My review of this place overall is between 3.5 and 4 stars.
The interior is pretty simply decorated and, looks like a cheap and cheerful Indian restaurant. The menu is fairly extensive and, has many traditional Indian dishes and, they have a range of Indian Thalis (mixed dish meal) on offer. We decided to order a few dishes to share and, for me, it's the best way to sample the range of flavours.
Service was very prompt and friendly however, they made no attempt to make recommendations or, suggest something we could try. In many places locally, when I start speaking Hindi, recommendation come out for some off menu items. Our food started to arrived pretty quickly after we ordered and, since we were all quite hungry, it was great.
The flavours here are much better suited to the western palate. The dishes are mild and creamy and, not so pungent. It was ok for me today however, I do like the intense flavours of Indian cuisine and, that was missing here for me. The food was tasty and better than many Indian places in town. I loved the Dal Makhani and, whilst it was not as thick as I would like it, the flavour made up for it. The Fish Punjabi was also nice and the Chapatis were nice and fresh. The Murgh Tikka Masala was too mild for my liking and, the samosa was also a bit below par. The desert was quite nice and whilst I liked the kulfi, it was a bit strange to have kulfi with coconut in it. I would have to say this is the first time in my life I have had kulfi with coconut.
This place is well suited for the local palette and, it was evident from the fact that the place was reasonably busy. For me it lacks the intensity of good North Indian cuisine and, missing some of the pungent flavours. Having said that, I would come back here again for a meal. It's good value for money and the dishes are quite nice. Service is quick and pleasant and overall quite an ok experience. It's a far cry from my favourite Indian in town but, is much closer to home :-) read more
