We have been fascinated by glass blowing long enough and finally decided to take a class. We contacted Ciara and arranged for a session, the Mrs. wanted to make a cobalt blue pumpkin with a yellow vine, I wanted to make a blue and green bubble bowl. The Studio is currently located out in the country on Laughlin Rd, but Ciara does have plans to open a studio closer to town. The studio itself is a fascinating setup with various poles, tubes and furnaces. One furnace contains a crucible with molten glass. Another furnace roaring away is where the glass is kept up to temperature while you are turning and working your piece. Then there is a cool down furnace that slowly brings down the temperature of the finished piece so that it doesn't shatter. Ciara is an excellent instructor and walked us through a quick demonstration before we started so as to give us an idea of what to expect. There are specifics as well regarding a working bench where you sit within a frame for rolling your glass rod back and forth. Using large cherry wood scoops that are soaking in water helps to maintain and shape the design of your glass. When we got started an ingot of molten glass was brought out of a furnace and we walked it to where there were trays of color crystals to roll the ingot in. After a little turning in the furnace the ingot was dipped into the crucible to add more glass, capturing the color in the middle. The hands on experience was absolutely worth it as Ciara guided us as when to blow into the tube, having us roll the glass, and in the case of my bubble bowl, we heated the front edge of a bubble I had blown, then she had me suck on the straw to extract the air out of the bubble and the ball caved in into a perfect bowl! This really was a lot of fun and we are already talking about doing this again! To have these fantastic blown glass items that we had a hand in creating is very rewarding. read more
