I am always on the lookout for lighthouses. On a trip we did to Eureka, California we discovered there was a lighthouse out on Woodley Island Marina. It was originally located south of Humboldt Bay but was relocated to Woodley Island Marina. This light was particularly useful as the coastline in this area was notoriously dangerous and rough. This lighthouse was the first one to become automated which was in 1953. Where the lighthouse it is close in proximity to the Lost Fisherman's Memorial statue where many fisherman lost their lives or went missing in this area. The tower to this light is short and stubby compared to some but has it's own unique signature as well. It looks a bit different than some of the ones that are located farther north in Oregon where you can pick up a lot of similarities in their architecture. The lighthouse is nicely restored now and looks sleek and clean so I suspect that it is more for tourism but it's a nice stop in addition to the memorial as you are out and about in Eureka. read more
