My room at the Fairfield Inn had a great view of The Tilted Map, and after noticing several people parking in the hotel lot and walking over, my curiosity got the best of me. While The Tilted Map does have its own small parking lot with lines painted for two rows of vehicles, it felt a little too tight for my comfort, so I ended up parking on the street. It seemed safer. The cafe is located in a beautifully restored former church, with stunning cathedral ceilings and Gothic-style windows. The space has been thoughtfully updated with lush plants, cozy seating areas, board games, and an array of unique wall clocks, along with a nice outdoor seating area that gives it a community feel. The cafe originally opened after Hurricane Helene in September of 2024, by the Mountain Aid Project, so volunteer groups could organize supplies and distribute them quickly. It never got disbanded and stayed a non-profit. They bought the church, made a community space and the cafe opened after. The name Tilted Map came from the Earth tilting at 23.44 degrees, which provides for seasons, migration, shadow, rest and growth. But resilience is what came after Hurricane Helene, as they had to shift or tilt after the crisis and neighbors needed to help each other. The cafe sells coffee, tea and scratch-made pastries. I was too focused on the pastries to realize they sold art too. The money from what they sell goes to tiny home construction, household essentials, and storm recovery for those in the area. The scratch-made pastries are baked in the commercial kitchen in the basement. Volunteers run the cafe. I ordered a sticky bun, a pumpkin cookie and a blueberry lemon cookie, and yes, they are as delicious as they look- sweet but not too sweet. Each cookie was packaged separately, and the sticky bun was made to order, with putting it in the container and adding the icing on top. They also had some gluten-free items for sale. There wasn't much left to choose from a little after 10am on a Saturday, so you might want to go earlier if you are looking for something in particular. The cafe has limited hours, so be sure to verify their schedule before you head out. Definitely check out this special spot if you are anywhere around Morganton! read more
