This marker in downtown Philadelphia is a couple of blocks from City Hall. It points out the history of one local citizen who did big things that still exist to this day. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Thomas Ustick Walter (1804-1887). Nationally prominent Philadelphia architect who designed the US Capitol dome and wings and Girard College. He was consulting architect for Philadelphia's City Hall. A founder of the American Institute of Architects, he served as its president. Walter lived near here 1837-41." He was the fourth architect of the Capitol and was in charge of adding the north (Senate) and south (House) wings as well as the central dome, which largely determine the building's current design.
